I'm ordering a tag kit from TBF today.
...nevermind. I forwarded the info to a family member instead. It'd make a nice x-mas gift.

I like to make sure my swordies are nice and dead before I tag them.
As Red Forman would say...Dumbass.

I have tagged quite a few. Only had one tag returned the fish had grown 12" and estimated 50# but the angler didn't remember where it was recaught.
TBF used to send confirmation to the Captains too but, no longer. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

He didn't remember where he caught the tagged fish? I may not remember the exact GPS #s, but geez... it must have taken a lot of booze to forget what city he was fishin off of.

Question: If I catch a tagged fish which I plan to release, should I remove the tag? ...or make note of the tag number, size, location, etc. and release it with the tag attached?

Re-read my post. He didn't remember where it was RE-caught (caught again) If you catch a tagged fish you are supposed to cut off the tag and send it in to TBF. They used to want us to keep the fish or a plug from around the tag for them but I think they stopped asking for that because we wouldn't kill a Sailfish for that. When looking for tags on fish remember that the original tag is orange and seen very easily but after a few weeks in the water it gets a growth of hard slime on it and is hard to see. The TBF used to notify both the Captain and angler who originally tagged the fish and also send notification of where it was originally tagged to the Captain and angler who recaptured the tag. My anglers I'm finding out get notified but I guess they stopped notifying the guy who buys and sticks the tag in the fish. That sucks! They also stopped sending the free tag certificates to the anglers. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

Exactly. The 2nd angler didn't remember where he re-caught the tagged fish? That's odd. I'm not implying that you forgot. Maybe something's getting lost in translation here.
It's no big deal. So, say I catch a tagged sailfish. I SHOULD clip the tag? Why not just get the info and let the fish go with the tag? That way, more data can be collected if that fish is dumb enough to eat a third hook.

Did that do it? I re-read it and I think that will clear it up!?! TO answer the other question. The last tag I recaptured was on a Sailfish and had some hard scale on it that was hard to get off. Looked like your boat would look without bottom paint, just not as thick. It took me about 15 minutes with a kitchen scrubby thing to halfway read it. Your sword won't last 15 minutes while you try to clean it and then TRY to read it with a flashlight. Just one wrong # and it screws up the catch records. That iis why they want the tag!!!!! They can cut the tag in two and pull the orange insert out of it, I think! YES! When you catch a tagged fish, clip the tag off as close to the fish as you can. Then, if you have tags you are supposed to put one of your tags back into the fish and it starts a new cycle. If you don't have any tags you simply release it with no tag or take it home to eat. Send the clipped off tag into TBF with the location caught, size, and weight of the fish. Capt. Jim The BEAST Last edited by The BEAST; 12-08-2006 at 12:29 AM.. |

Eureka! Thanks Beast, that cleared it up. I thought the word "he" was referring to the John Doe.
![]() Good info on the tag recovery process too. I wasn't aware that the tag could be so difficult to read. Cut and release. Good advice. |

Hooked Up

I have tagged over 1,000 sharks in the National Marine Fisheries Service program.
Totally free for participants. They would provide feedback from BOTH the tagger as well as recapturer. PLUS they hooked you up with a sweet embroidered hat. Im not sure if they are still running this program, but it was great. Something like this would be absolutely great for swordies. Here's the link: http://na.nefsc.noaa.gov/sharks/ |
