Default what color glowsticks, everything

going out to La Jolla Canyon this weekend in san diego. this will be my first time going for swordfish. any tips on rigging, color of glowsticks, depth to fish. I thiught I would throw the 50 about 300' with a breaak off weight so that it can drift up with us and cover more water. does chumming help? I'm goning to see about getting some nice size squid for bait with mackrel as a back up. anything and everything you guys and girls want to say. thanks

Start by reviewing this thread:

Sword Track

For starters, look at the chart I posted. I guarantee you that any bait placed below 100' will go untouched by a sword. Also, if you just drift fish as they do here in Florida, you will be plagued by sharks all night. Mostly blue sharks now, as the water is getting on the cold side for makos.

I've been trolling them at night off SoCal. It keeps the blue sharks away and minimizes the makos when you place the baits below 40'. No success with swords yet. There is no one else out there doing this, at least I've never seen nor heard of anyone.

You will need some special rigging to troll. I think I posted a pic of what I'm doing with the squid. Basically a trimmed and sewn humboldt slid up into a 17" shell squid. The shell squid prevents it from blowing out and keeps it together in the event that it's bill whacked. PM me if you want to know more. I was looking for anyone to go out in La Jolla Canyon last Friday/Saturday and ended up doing housework and Xmas decorations. This weekend I'm screwed by commitments.

thanks for the info steve, I read the stuff on BD's. so out at the canyon what depth of h2o do think we should start fishing in? as far as rigging I found some things to try one of them is to use a waterfilled bobber up inside the squid. saw something like that in the rigging section and the other way is using a bottle cap, got that from a fishing mag. if your ever looking for someone to go i'm always good for big gameand the way i'm looking at it is that the season is just starting. as far as sharks go I am going to keep my bait rod rigged incase I see some fins.
