Default Deep Drops

Anyone making deep drops on a regular basis? (while swordfishing)

With this topic of escolar recently, it seems like the deep has some mysterious critters, here and there. What are you likely to catch if you try?

Where are those tilefish situated anyway?

Every now and then I will drop my tip line an extra 100 ft. or so to vary the spread but I have NOT normally done 600-700-800-900 ft.

The few times I've tried deep-dropping on Hollywood Hills (daytime but not like it matters 1200ft down...) we caught rosies and a black permit lookin' thing.

My tilefish and grouper spots are farther inshore.

Default No reported successes for deep drops for swords in daytime.

Barf:

If it is no big secret, what depths and locations are favorable for the tilefish? I have not really explored deep bottom fishing but I would like give it a try sometime. I do not have an electric reel but I believe a colleague of mine that lives in Miami wants to get one. Once he does I may invite him (with his reel) to try it out of Hillsboro.

I was speaking with Ray "Rosher" and he has not had any luck hooking up with swordfish by deep dropping in the daytime. (But at least he has tried) He may have to speak for himself but if I recall correctly he runs a fairly consistent spread for swordfishing, at night, without doing any deep drops. Hey, but that is swordfishing, not targeting the other species.

the problem u would have with deep dropping while your out swording is that,if u happen to get a bite, and the fish charges the boat u will get a tangle with the deep drop rig and with the fish.

Default Cabo-Wabo, a great appeteezer.

Joe:

Yeah, I was thinking of deep dropping for other species in the daytime, mostly, and stay focused on optimum swordfishing spread.

But I am still fishing for some escolar tips.

Shim the sushi monger that owns Osaka restaurant says that his escolar supply comes from Chile. So I am not sure if the local escolars would taste any different than the colder water counter parts from the S.A. Pacific counterpart.

So you're moving to Cabo... Enjoy the Wabo on this leg of your journey.

My tilefish spots are inshore of Hollywood Hills and in the 600 - 800 foot range. Look for holes, rocks, the usual structure. Next time you're looking for dolphin, keep an eye on your depthfinder and save anything interesting. If the wind and current allow, make a drop or two.

I have not seen a yelloweye or queen offshore here. I would be very interested in hearing if anyone else has. I've heard of them in the keys but never North of Miami.

Two years ago I tried copying Venezuelan techniques and fishing deep during the daytime for swords - didn't catch one. I wasn't able to give it as much time as I wanted and am still convinced it would work. I think the 1000 - 1200 foot range was too shallow and spectra would have helped greatly.
