Default New Guy to the Forum - With a few questions - thanks

I have been a lurker for a while and I am finally jumping in and joining the fun. I have been Sword fishing for a few years on a friends boat and we have done quite well. I have reciently purchased a 26 regulator to travel to the 50 line and have some fun. The boat is finally all rigged and now I am lookig to purchase the rods and reels. I have decided to go with the Tiagras 50WLRS spooled with jerry brown and a top shot of 80.

I compared the Shimano's to the Penn and The Shimano's just seem to offer more for the bang. Is there an overall oppinion about the 50WLRS? Besides moving into the world of 80's IS there a better choice than the 50WLRS? How much line should I top shot the reel with? And finally should I go with the JB 80 or 100lb braid?

Thanks for your help, I do not have the braid issues down because all we fish on my friends boat is Penn 80W with 80lb Suffix.

I will still be fishing with my friend Ian on his L&H when he is out there but when he is not going and the weather is nice I will be out on my Regulator. We leave out of Port Everglades.

FYI... The ONLY difference between the Tiagra 50WLRS and the 80W is the line capacity. The drags are exactly the same. Knowing this, I prefer using my smaller 50s. Line capacity is about 800yds of 130 JBHC. If a fish can take ALL that with full heat (approx. 37lbs without "thumbs"), then it deserves it.

Actually, the correct comment is that the drag is the only thing that is the same

I recently purchased an alutecnos 80w on ebay. If it comes (the deal was kinda shady) and the reel is good, I will be selling a tiagra 50 on a custom 80 # rod. Let me know if you are interested.[/list]

Well... yeah. I'm talkin 'bout capability, aka: drag pressure and line capacity.

Yeah, the drag cam is such that you get the same drag range as the 80, but you know for starters that the drag surface area is not the same. Then there's line capacity and torque differences. Don't get me wrong, I love my four Tiagra 50WLRS reels. My Penn 50SW mostly sits on the pine.

Tiagra 50's are a great choice, 80's are nice too.
Go with the Jerry Brown 130, it's actually cheaper than the JB 80,
then you can put a 100 yd topshot of 80 or 100, or you can go straight braid.
Contact Tek at reelproshop, Jahmussa on the forum, He'll set you up right.
Actually he can outfit you to the gills from head to toe. First class service.

Oh and welcome

The specs from Shimano for the 80w and 50wlrs show the exact same max drag numbers, and a nearly identical slope. Just the gear ratios are different.
