Default Sighting Mr Mako

Very slow night. 0/2. One hit on a gog, one on a squid.
Drift started off Hillsboro, ended 4am west of boynton.
1am a huge mako swims right up to the light. Won't eat.
Offerings included Horse gog and runner, cut and live
and a stinky old ladyfish head. Fish stayed around the
boat for over an hour  . Had the opportunity to
stick-em, but not enough balls or floats to do so with
any hope of a landing. What a beast, but wasn't very
agressive. Hi-light of an ultra slow evening

DF,

Sounds awesome. Sounds like you had some time here is some food for thought, If you have a good Poon shot. Take either a 20 foot piece of harpoon line and splice an eye then attach to your biggest rod with a snap swivel. Try and button hook the fish so you won't pull the Lily out. Also # 14 wire with chaffing gear on the wire where it enters the lily works to.

Or make him follow you into the shallows and drowned him.

Default Good Ideas

Were grossly unprepared to deal w/ a fish this size,
every bit of 12' 400-500lbs, and THICK. TD, love the idea about
attaching to a rod..What do you mean by button hook?
We definately had lots of time, Honestly as big as he
was I was afraid to stick him that close to the boat with
no way to slow him down. Dreamed about that pointy
headed devil last night  . Part of me would love
to catch and kill him, but part of me is glad he's still out
there doing his thing. I'd never seen one this size, it was
truly awe inspiring
DF2

PS--Anybody get into trouble 2am off boca around the 48.
Saw a helicopter and police boat intercept a bouy guy fishing
near us, but didn't hear anything on the radio?

Button hook: All the way through, in one side and out the other. best off right above and behind the gill (a little more behind, it is softer and you can get some momentum to go through, if you don't go through you are done because it WILL pull) and out between the pecs. You could get lucky and she could just bleed out.

Great idea.. never thought of that... Anyone ever use this method with the polyball.. this way you dont have to worry about losing sight of the ball on a big ass fish...?

Default Gotcha

Got it, thanks TD. Low gunnels on this vessel.
All I could think of was this pig going apes#@t,
and airborne into the cockpit  . I'll admit it, this
fish scared me . Think you'd be foolish not to be.

I have never let a Poly ball go in the dark. I do not see any reason it would not work.

DF,

It sounds like you left your Man card at home.

No, I hear you, those things are not to be taken lightly. Especilly when you are trying to steal them

DF. I don't think I would dart him either. Would not like to probably kill the fish, lose a dart, and still not have dinner either.

Will do Steve, I am coming Weds. for the Hydraglow. I will see if I can get two in plastic with lids. My only problen is I do not have a freezer in my condo (my wife will shoot me if I try to put them in her freezer, does not like all the squid as it is). Any ideas?

Even though you didn't get her, it sounds like it was an experience of a life time, one that not too many of us will ever experience. Great story
