Great work Drew and crew. I hear the fish went 530 pounds.
Here's the best we came up with this weekend, solid 200 pounds. Oops, I just hijacked your thread

I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, caught and killed a large predator that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the beaches are open and people are having a wonderful time. Pompano, as you know, means "friendship".

Swordfisherman, it's all psychological. You yell barracuda, everybody says, "Huh? What?" You yell swordfish, we've got a panic on our hands on the forty-nine o-five.

Sorry for the delay - this is the first chance I've had all day to post something.
Our night started like any other night with a comfortable ride out which put us on the grounds before dark. The crew consisted of Paul Aldrich, Gary Margolin and myself. We started to deploy the baits a little after sunset in hopes of a early hook-up. At 6:00pm we put three baits on balloons in the water and the tip rod with the light in hand getting ready to drop under the boat. I noticed the middle balloon rod had a good bend. Click, Click, Click was all I needed to hear to veryify we were TIGHT. I told Gary to get harnessed up while I stayed tight and brought the rod to the back of the boat. Gary began the battle with the fish not really doing to much except using its massive weight to swim into the current towards what was tugging on its head. One hour into it the fish made its first long run coming to the surface racing off to the east. This was the most stressful part of the fight, backing the boat offshore to help keep pace with the fish. As it headed offshore dumping line, in a split second it changed direction and the line went slack. The backing down quickly changed to all ahead full and with a few seconds where we thought she was gone, only to see a slight bend come back into the rod just for an instance then more slack. With Gary ready for a tag out the next man up was yours truly. The fish was charging the boat and taking a NE to SW heading which was evident by the light stick trailing behind. I have seen lots of big fish but when it swam past the bow ten feet down I was in awe at the actual length and said nah just not a good look but definetly BIG. Ten more minutes and I'm tagging out to give Paul a chance to pull on a GIANT. Now it was time for Paul to put some line on the reel and wear her down. While doing so, I manuveured the boat to help fight the fish. Since I didn't really get a good look I never said to Paul and Gary that it might be 400+ lbs. Paul took over the helm, I had the rod, and Gary had the gaff - at this point it was almost done. The last ten minutes the fish was hard dead weight, inch by inch, until the light stick popped out from under the boat. Not wanting to put the boat in gear I moved to the bow to help the process of pulling it in backwards and saw what at first quess was 350lbs. The gaff went into the head and the second followed shortly there after. The head was massive and my quess went to 400lb until we got it towards the back of the boat. The 500lb mark has been in my dreams for years and I didn't want to get over anxious but after 30 minutes of trying to get it into the boat with no success, I thought maybe this was the one. Capt Ed from Find-a-Fish charters had seen us manuvering the boat chasing the fish and offered to lend a hand. With the beast in tow mid-ship dragging aft we took a heading towards Ed. He had his mate come aboard and help us try to get her in the baot. Within 15 minutes we were slowly inch by inch getting her more and more into the boat until finally she was in and I was almost sure she was 500. We headed in and made it back to LHP Marina by 10:05pm. With the help of friends Bill Collector,Chris Payne and Jimmy Oliver of we got her up on the scales to weigh-in at 530lbs. Good to know especialy if someone catches one that big in the tournament that the scale can handle the load. It was an awesome experience - It took many years and several trips out there to make it happen and I couldn't be happier!!! I look forward to seeing everyone at the SESC meeting Tuesday night!
