ight well this all came about friday night watching the beeper buoys drift. why do we all use hydraglows and swordlights or whatever you have if all the buoy gear guys dont have a hydraglow or swordlight on their buoy? and these are the guys catching the 600lbers in ft. pierce and recently 450lbers right here off of ft. lauderdale. does anyone else see where i am coming from here?? their have been numerous fish caught on buoy gear in the past year over 300 without hydrglows and swordlights. so why do us rod n reel guys use them?? just a question to think about.

Yep!!!! I've had some of my sickest nights with no light......
Tossing the swordlight over the side is pretty cool though..... It doesn't hurt you, but it does let you see that fish if she's swimming around the boat!

As alot of you might know,I fish bouy gear as well as do quite a bit of rod and reel fishing. Having done alot of rod and reel fishing with and without a hydroglow, I would have to say my own personal experience is that I have caught my biggest fish "darked out".I think that this was more coincidence than anything else. I seem to get more bites with either my built in underwater lights on or with the Hydroglow in the water.I enjoy my fishing more with the underwater lights on,because I like to watch all the stuff that comes into the glow.It is worth mentioning that there have been plenty of slobs caught under or around these lights. The light certainly won't scare them away. So if it helps pass the time while waiting for a bite, why not?

I have fished a lot with both and I can say that, firmly, that I'm not really sure if the hydroglow helps. I caught a lot of fish before I could afford the luxury of my 'glow but I catch a lot of fish now with it. It is really cool to watch the lightsticks on the tip rod take off without the light but it is also really cool to see a swordie follow your bait to the boat in the light that I never would have seen without the 'glow in the water.
Read the previous posts about when to use the lights (no light w/full moon...etc.) 'cause there are some neat insights in them. PS..I agree...Its much more amusing to fish with a light in the water. The netted bycatch alone makes it worthwhile. |

I like the light to better see the fish once close to the boat for gaffing etc. Have had good luck with and without the light and a few of the top capt's frequently do without as well. The small bait light is much more important.DUKE

I think with the gear you have to consider the no boat factor. Not that the fish are shy but, with no noise I am sure they swim up to the bait a little less catious. I am not a big fan of the light but, it does attract bait (Tinkers) so based on the food chain I don't think it hurts.

I do not believe it "helps" but I have caught many fish, especially in the winter when the tinkers are high because I saw the fish and moved/pitched a bait.

As for myself, I think its one of those things that may vary form night to night, but in general I think that the really big girls like it dark.
Its almost impossible to come to a conclusion on the light issue. On some night's, (while fishing rods) when nothing seems to be happening, I've shut the light off and sure enough we've gotten action. I also seem to get alot of hits when I'm first putting my lines out and I never put the light in the water till the whole spread is out. Then, of course, you have the next scenario here which confuses the issue even more and that is.............. On nights when we fish the bouy gear and its slow, we put out a light and a couple of rods. I use a white hydoglow, and yes, I changed the bulb. The bouys that are closer to us, when we have the light in the water, are always the ones that end up getting hit. I'm usually no more than a couple hundred yards from my spread. I can say for certain that this scenario happens consistently but I can't really draw any conclusions from it. The only thing that does come to mind, would be to try to fish your spread as far as possible from the boat........This could be some explanation of why my long bait that I fish at no deeper than 50 feet accounts for so many of the fish I catch when fishing rods. By long, I mean long, its at least 300 yards out. For some strange reason nobody wants to be the one that has to crank that one in?? The only thing that I can say for sure about putting any light in the water is that its extremely irritating to my eyes. But, it sure is entertaining to see all the creatures that it attracts.

I personally think the Hydro Glow for safety reasons. The water is pitch black and this allows you about 15ft of lit up water to see what is going on. If it wasn't for the light this one night, JR1 would have a Sword bill through his chest when the fish charged up and almost into the boat with the bill bouncing off the cabin of my walkaround. When I catch a fish in the light, then I will change my opinion

BUT, Keep in mind that the baits beneath buoys drift and behave different than baits dragging from boats. The buoys float with the current and allow baits to hang fairly motionless in relation to the water movement. Baits under a balloon are travelling at the same speed as the boat, which is being pushed by wind, and essentially slow-trolled through the water. Not as natural-looking as buoy presentation. So, it may be a good technique to free-line your long balloon way out, reel it back, and free-line it out again. That way, it's interaction with the boat's drift is minimal. ...just a thought. |

Light is better it brings the bait and one night george and I were ending the night stripping the old squids off the hooks when a nice 74" fish came up and thought he was getting a free meal until the last bait which had an 11/0 in it. Plus we have caught some nice fish with the light on and I think in the winter it def helps get thier attention when the water temps get cold. I fished alot with no light and have caught fish but I like using the light. I think the secret behind getting the big fish having ur bait in the right place at the right " time ".

I usually fish with the light first and if nothings happening I do a drift with no light. I have have some good trips fishing without a light. Look at it this way the swordfish eat all there lives without a light and get plenty fat doing it...
Having said that I enjoy the glow of the light and seeing what wanders into it. Without the light I would have missed a lot of things going on out there including watching swords feeding which is always epic. |
