Sword fishing question

I have fished on many boats and ive seen people put the lead close to the leader and some people put it 50 feet from the leader. Which is better? does it matter? thanks

I put it about 50 feet away from the squid so the fish has a chance to eat without feeling any weight.

I think I put ONE wax loop at 35ft away from the beginning of the wind-on for the weight.
