Good Report Joe:
Yeah, that is what I like to hear! My ears are itching and need to be scratched and hopefully Hannaman's prediction for this windy season is going to come true.... Cary predicted we would be catching multiple fishes over 300 lbs. this season. We may not need a bigger boat, but the deep freeze may need to be kicked up a notch or cleaned out. I am making a Paella Valenciana tomorrow for my son's birthday party, mine too. Does anyone have some fresh or fresh frozen belly meat of swordfish they can spare? I am completely out at the moment. (Sshh- secret ingredient ! ) If you donate I can offer you a nice portion of Paella, but you will need to be here or I can make up the favor somehow. I have friends in Miami that are coming this way, so swordslashers in Miami-Dade can donate to a worthy cause too. Thanks. |

Chummin:
Are you most active on the southern grounds: Fowey Lighthouse is a mark. Are you upstream of that position mostly? Do you ever exit out of Caesar's creek? It sounded like Hollywood is a reach, but not too difficult, if you just keep drifting, just keep drifting, da, da, da. Hey, if you ever do that, you can always dock up at my place, (Hillsboro Inlet), before your cruise back to those littler Lattitudes. I get there by boat once in a while, many more times by car. But I love Miami. Mercie calls it LatinLand, and that it is. |

We got a late start due to work but had sometime before the bite turned on. I got three jugs in the water and started on a tip rod when the far jug started taking line and we were on. I was thinking it was a small sword at first but got a nice surprise when a 45lb Escolar poped up along side the boat aka White Tuna. During the short 20 minute battle the middle jug lost its ballon, thought that was odd and when we started to reset every that one started taking back line. Were on again and it was another short battle with a clean release on a 40lber. Time to start over and but a fresh spread out. Again 3 jugs and a rod tip in the water when the far jug comes down and were tight again. This time we are losing more line that were gaining for the first half hour and seems to be a decent fish. Inside jug breaks off and we think we might be tangled in the fish so we freespool that line until Chip notices I'm gaining and his is taking, now its a double. Chip got his in about 15 minutes and released our second fish of the night while i did battle with mine. The first hour went quicker than the last 2 due to the fact that the fish stayed within a couple hundred feet but wouldn't just give us that little bit we needed. Finaly with a little boat handling and some tough few yards the fished popped up off the port side and I let her fly, done deal right thru the gill plates and out the other side. It turned out to be a great night for us going 3 for 3 on swords releasing 2, boating one at 65" 144lbs and a 45lb Escolar. Wish i could go again tonight but off to the boat show i go on 3hrs sleep.

Saturday night was pretty good. Almost everyone out had a fish on. We got ours about 10 pm. He hit the tip rod ( no hydraglow) I never saw the hit, I just glanced over at the rod and saw the line all slack floating around, my buddy sees the fish greyhounding on the surface on the other side of the boat. We had to get the motors trimmed up before I could get a real set on him. The fish stayed on the surface, I got tight but the fish stayed still not fighting, I thought we had a pup and then she takes a quick run and jumps 40 feet from the boat clear out of the water then sounds about a 100 yards. 45 minutes later we had him boatside and he was still green. He made a run to go under the boat so I took a chance and got a bad shot with the poon but still was able to hold him at the boat. My buddy goes to bill the fish and I saw this fish cock back and swing at my buddy's head. He split him open about an inch across, I heard the smack on his head it was so hard. Finally we got his 65 inch ass. Pics in the gallery. ( caught some nice Dolphin on a 4 X 4 on the way out)

Darkside:
That was a very interesting post about the escolar you caught the other night and it sounded like a decent size fish. I have never caught one but I sure do enjoy a few pieces on a sashimi plate from the local Sushi Bars. Is anybody very familiar with catching these fish? If so can you provide good web-links or advice on catching these guys. Like, are they primarily a daytime fish but can catch a few after dark? I have a fish book but I don't recall seeing the fish listed in it so I can't learn anything from that resource. Do they have a lateral bone structure like the tunas? Thanks for feedback. |
