How would you suggest to set up a sword drift for a large SF. I have an 18' beam so I can run 5 rods off the transom or quartered. I could run off the riggers as well but that would be a PITA. I have a large sea anchor but I am not sure how to deploy it to get us in a good position. I also have a full keel so a beam drift is not very comfortable. Thanks for the help!

I have fished a 60+ viking a few times for swords, and each time we found it best to keep the engines on and put the bow into the wind to keep all the baits behind the boat.. 2 tip rods and several jug baits using the outriggers also.
If you have 4+ rod holders on one side of the boat than it can be done effetively to put out a sea anchor at the midship and drift out your baits.. however, most of the balloon baits will be in a straight line... my .02 good luck |

I run a 67 bertram and you can run 4 rods fairly easy with the help of one or 2 of the 3 in 1 rod holders commonly used for kite fishing.
Just make sure you use good safety lines on each rod. Many times the boat will drift slightly quarter to the lines, if it seems like the lines are going to the bow just swing the boat 180 and fish off the other side. This stops you from having to keep the engines running all night. |

we fish off a 48' and i just let the boat do its thing and drift like any other boat.
Every time i have been out my lines end up off the starboard side- no matter the drift, it just seems to work that way. I run one tip off the back corner and the rest on balloons that float out off the starboard back quarter of the boat. Usually the balloons end up staggered between 4 and 6 o clock (6 being directly aft of the boat) No riggers or anythig, just let the boat float and balloons do the rest

When its 6-8 like its been, we are all running 18 knots! With the refrigerator on the bridge you don't even have to leave the protection of the stratoglass for a cold one.
