Does color makes a diference?

Hey guys,

I recently prepared some leaders for swording. I used a green color Momoi leader is this OK?. I normally fish using the red that they sell already rigged with squids. Does any body seen any difference in the bite using a different color? Which color do you normally use and why? Thanks

Do this simple experiment in your house. At night in the darkest room possible snap a lightstick and hang it from the ceiling. Now attatch two leaders of different colors next to each other, next to the lightstick. Make them at least 10 or so feet long. It helps if you have a second person to hold the leaders. Step back and look at them from different angles. It's pretty interesting to see. If you can see the difference through your ping pong sized eye, I can only imagine what a swordy sees through that baseball sized eye.

Color Quicky dissappers the deeper you go in the water (RED being the first color to disappear). You would have to be in a sub to realy test.

In Bimini I had out 200 lb Floro and 400 lb mono leaders. The mono was hit every time... No color on the leaders.

In the hudson Canyon I got them on butter fish and 80 lb floro... So I have not seen a differance Between Floro or Mono.

As for Color, Personal I think it may be a day to day thing with these fish. Carry Different leaders on board all the time.

ROY G BIV is the acronym of the order that colors disappear.
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet

Red turns to green at 12 ft., that is a DISTANCE of 12 ft thru water from light source. In most cases the Sun is the light source. Like people scuba diving during the day. This is not true for swordfishing. The light source for us swordfishing is the LP, glow stick, or what ever you are using next to your bait. It's like a scuba diver that takes a flashlight with him while doing a night dive. Everything he shines his light on no matter what depth he is at, that is not more than 12 ft. away will reflect its true color.
To sum it up, depth has nothing to do with it if you take a light source with you.
The color disappears, or is lost, NOT the light emanating from the light source. The light is still there just not the color. Try it at night in a swimming pool if you are still having a problem grasping the idea.

I understand the light analysis you gave, makes perfect sense.
What color do you recommend for sword leaders. Blue, Clear?

I think you have to consider that at the depths we are fishing almost all the red from the surface light spectrum has been absorbed. That being said, I would work with a leader that is the same color as the light you are using.

think of a blue piece of construction paper under a blue light.

If it is laying on a white table but the only light is red, the paper and the table look the same color.

Perhaps if you dye squid you should use the opposite color of the light you are using. That would give you the greatest contrast and make the squid more visible.

My .02

Number ones Swords do not see any color.

Their eyes are designed to pick up light sources and silhouettes

These are ancient fish with a perfect design for the feeding habits of their dark environment. I have been experimenting by using cable leaders in the spread just incase Mrs. Mako comes along and eats the rest of the spread one will hook her and the cable leader rigs get eaten just as good as the Mono ones as far as the Swords are concerned. Might even be better since the diameter is smaller and has less of a silhouette.

If you fish your lights close I do not think it matters because these fish can see the silhouette of the leader, whatever your leader color is all will cast a silhouette of some sort. These fish are looking up to find their prey and as long as it looks like something to eat they will eat it.

I have used leaders from 500# to 250# mono clear right along side cable leaders and the cable was the first rod to get smoked.

Now if someone can create a line that does not cast a silhouette from the light we attach to our lines we would have it made.
