Andrew,

I fished from Richards Bay, SA. We traveled as far as 1500nm to the east, but the Spanish fleet worked nearly due North of you. The best months are now until Febuary. Shallow gear seems to work well there (+/- 100ft to the bait).

I have a mate who buys Aus. caught fish, he says the commercial guys are doing well year round.

Good Luck

Nightfighter, the best time for swordies in the northern Gulf isn't winter. We do best on them during the summer months. Just because Miami's good in the winter doesn't mean that the rest of the state is.

Andrew, devote an afternoon to reading this site and drinking Fosters. Lots of good information and advice. Then get out there and try it. You'll start developing your own theories and methods right away.

Very true. I was talking about the migrating fish.

Hey Oz...Good luck. Depth is usually around 1200 ft. The bottom middle numbers on your gps should be around 50.00. Three baits is enough to get started on. Fifteen ft. leaders with 2 lbs. of weight and a glowstick(or two) rubber banded to the swivel will work. I like blue or green lightsticks. Whole squid with a 11/0 j-hook sewed into them works well. Also a bridled live bait of any kind (as long as its at least 12") works well. Put your baits on balloons as floats and stagger the depths. Make sure you put at least one bait straight below the boat (tip rod) and drop it 'till you just cant see the glowstick anymore. My advice is to fish your reels in the strike position....that way there are fewer things that can go wrong when you get hit.
PS...Start your drift just south of Hollywood (fl) and enjoy the ass-whoopin.
Catch 'em up.
