I have a friend who thinks he catches the most swords in florida out of any angler. i was just curious to see if anyone would want to start keeping count of their catches starting jan. 1 of 2004 and at the mid point and end of the year we could see who has indeed landed the most of these monsters. catch 'em up

Why not just go by the reports to NMFS, I think I'm probably the top reporter there. But, I know for a fact, I'm nowhere near the top in actual catches out there.
Actually that is a good point for another thread. Who reports, who doean't and why. I know some of you were at the SE Swordfish club meeting when we had a visit by NMFS agents who are investigating illegal sale of swords, and no reporting. The called or met with some of the captains on this forum. At any rate, its probably not a good idea to keep tabs of catches on the internet if you are not reporting your fish to NMFS. |

Very good point Ron. I was out there wednesday of last week and heard you on the radio. We were busy fighting a fish for 3.5 hours that eventually pulled the hooks, but a fun night nevertheless.
You make some very very good points and you are definetly an experienced swordfisherman. I'm with you on your points. I too don't believe we as recreational fisherman can make a big difference to the industry. I am just glad that on any given night we can go out there and have an excellent shot at a chance to land one. And landing one fish is all we need to be happy, wheres as the commerical guys can't. Does the nmfs have a website on swordfish? Thanks, Tim |

i dont think rec fishing will make an impact but who the hell wants to call in all the fish?? i mean you have to give measurements and location ect.. if you have a multipul fish night.. example last weds went 8 for 9 who wants to call in all that? sounds kinda dumb to me

Ron, You raised a good point with NMFS. They always say they are looking out for our "THE RECREATIONAL FISHERMAN'S" best interest. We all know that is not always the case. Just look at the bluefin restrictions on the boys up north of you. The comercial boys get more and we get less and less. Some times in the fishing world. LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS!
Hopefully this will not be the case for us with the swordfish. |
