Default SFC and FS Swordfishing VHF Radio channel 78 announced

I have heard from a few forum members about the chatter on channel 72 lately while swording. So I thought I would try and suggest a possible option.

How about everyone using channel 78 vs 72 from now on. Last year there was a ton of garbage chatter on the radio from a few guys that wanted to tell jokes. Although some of it was funny as hell... some of it was just be plain discustingly rude.

Channel 72 is our local channel for hailing other boats IMO. Once you find your buddy on 72, the conversation should be taken to another channel. I'm suggesting that since there is a large population of Forum members Swordfishing, why not just camp out on 78 to discuss all the things that are currently beind discussed on 72.

Some of the guys fishing might have their kids, wife or girlfriend out there and I'm sure they don't want to hear about how our day went. Not to mention some of the language being used. Remember there is a larger group of swordfisherman that don't read or understand about the forum. If they want to listen to forum members... let them follow you to 78.

I'm no angel but as I get older, I understand the importance of having channel 72 open and free from most of the chatter that has taken over lately.

Thanks for considering the idea...

Good idea.
We have been saying "go to the other one" (75), but 78 would work.

Sounds like a plan. I don't keep 72 on when the kids are in the boat for that reason. A little courtesy, and respect for others goes a long way.
Good thinking Tek,

Thank god, please post the same thing on the other forum .......I dont understand how people have so much time to talk on the radio......check your baits.

72 is a contact channel, make contact and then go to another channel.

Thanks Tek

Default Yep, you should move a conversation off of 72

Go up one.

Go up 2.

Go up 3

Go up 6.

This is a good suggestion for moving a conversation off of a generally used hailing channel; however, inappropriate radio usage is just as bad even if it is happening on 78, 75, 74, 73, etc.

Obscene and nasty language is simply a violation of FCC rules and should not be condoned on any broadcast channel. For the most part these rules are not extensively enforced, especially 13 miles offshore, but they could be at any time. And it would certainly ruin anyone's fishing trip to get slapped with a fine.

So it is always a good practice to mind your radio language and move anything other than a short dialogue to a working channel, other than 72.

We witnessed this last Friday night pretty bad.

Saturday wasn't too nice either with my mom and grandparents on board. We turned it off for a while and turned it back on about 30 minutes later and it was clear for the most part.

Both of these night barely any fish were caught. So people that had many too many amused themselves.

Not a bad idea. There's been numerous times when I've wanted to get in touch with someone out there and haven't even been able to get a word in edgewise over the VHF idiots. Most of the time I end up leaving it on 16 till the idiots go home.

Im up for the switch.

Last weekend on the radio, I heard a bit of negativity on the radio directed at the two forums.

Friday night, was totally ridiculous. I don't know who the punks on 72 were, but man, I think they belong in a sandbox,
not out on the 50. I just shut it off and turned it back on around 1 am after the idiots were put to sleep in their cribs.

Tek, great idea. I had my daughter out on thursday and there was a group out there
for satelliite tagging and I had to shut the radio off. ditto on saturday night because
I had a couple of ladies onboard who could not believe how immature adult
americans are. I go out to fish to escape the BS I have to deal with on a
day to day basis in S FL; I don't want to listen to racist and homophobic
comments and a lot of bad jokes. I'll be on channel 78. cheers, arthur

I metioned this awhile back. I agree we should talk on a diff channel. For some reason some guys dislike the forum family. Probaly cause in the last 4 to 5 tourneys we have taken 1st everytime. Damn haters. Find me on 72 but hollar on 78.

If I'm not mistaken (which has happened on occasion) isn't it a violation of FCC regs to use the radio for anything other than basic communication? and aren't decency rules applicable since it is a public airwave?

Just a thought
