Default Motors on or off

Ive been doing bunch of searching the forum instead of just shooting questions, but i see that everyone says engines off, is that a must, and does that include the genset, just dont like the idea of being 10 miles out with no genset, or engines on.....

there was a topic a few weeks ago about this... noise makes absolutely no difference.. run your generators, engines, etc.

We in fact get A LOT of bites when turning on the engines to move to a new area...

The Big swordfish like the rolling stones being played loud.

Don't NEED a sword light either. Our hydroglow quit working last week. I brought up my deep tip to check the bait, and a sword followed it up. I saw the fish in the light from our spreaders, fed it, hooked it, jumped it, then locked the drag and hauled it in. 57" released. Engines were running.

Guys, if you read his post, he is not sure about motors/genset being turned off when so far offshore (safety factor).

Captadamr,

If you are confident in your rig and your batteries to crank your motors/genset, then turn everything off. I have 4 group 31's on my boat and I shut 2 off and leave two on....that way if those two get low, I can put everything paralleled and still start my motors up to charge.

Ah... yes. Safety issues. Leave 'em on. That's primarily why we leave ours on. But also to adjust the drift angle, and be ready to move to chase a fish.

well if i was on my 33 Tiara i would shut down everything in a heartbeat, but on the 36 hatt express that we just bought im not too keen on cutting the motors with the radar spinning, 12V lights, 2 bottom machines..etc..
guess i will leave em on, besides maybe they will like the hum of the 6-71s, i know their blue cousins seem to

Capt. Adam,

These fish don't seem to be boat shy and I would leave the motors running. For safty reasons and to raise some slobs. My guess is that you'll have better swordfishing closer to florida than you would in Nassau. Seems like there are too many sharks over there in the Bahamas, but please let us know how you do. Good Luck!

apparently there was one caught off nassau last year, purely by luck, so since im based out of nassau. I know of people who have caught them in Abaco, and the exuma soundf. Hey they are in Jamaica, so what the hell, i bought some LPs a flat of squid and a bunch of glowsticks, so im gonna give it a good effort and see what happens
