The night started out as an uneventful fishing trip. Expectations were high, the wind was from the n/w around 10mph. the seas were 2' with a little chop. we set up 0n the 51 with the drift 2.8nt's to the n/e. the usual spread with a mix of colors. Purple and green. Chris (igotbenifits) was on his 6th trip with his cherry still firmly gripped with both hands. after drifting for an hour or so, i was adjusting the depth of the tip rod between 200 and 400'. as luck would have it i mentioned to Chris how cool it would be to get spooled by a slob.... the tip rod bends a little and some drag was pulled. a couple of little slashes on the bait, two more short runs of drag and i had enough. i moved the strike lever to 25# of drag and started cranking like hell. the more i cranked the tighter we got. with a solid hookup on what i thought was a small fish we cleared the other lines and the fight was on. in very short order we figure out this was no small fish, i dont think at this point the fish even knew it was hooked. it was digging, straight down in 1500'+ of water. i was moving the boat to keep the fish planing and trying to keep ahead of it. with more than 1/2 the spool gone we started to make some headway on the fish. at this point Chris is whooped like ken shamrock in ortiz-shamrock 3. Capt. rob takes over and fares no better. me, im driving the boat and keeping us ahead of the fish. another trip to the cockpit to watch the action and it happens.... pulled the hook... what a look of relief on the faces of all involved as we had pretty much given up on turning this one. so the 6th trip with Chris and the score is Chris 0, sword 1. until next time...

seemed like hours but probably more like 1/2 an hour or 45 min.. with 25# of drag we were just following the fish and loosing. capt rob had gained a little back but that was just part of the give and take thing. if i had gone back to 15# or so it would have been decision time on how to keep from replacing 850 yards of jbhc 130 or getting a wrap on the reel and hoping it breaks at my swivel. thats the weekest link on my line. the 50w cant make enough drag to break the line. with 25# at strike i get 35+# at full on the tiagras.

Same thing happened to us last night. It was a few minutes past 1 am and we made the call to reel em up. As we all grqbbed a rod the far jug goes off screaming. I got tight on her for about 5 minutes and pulled the hooks. We had alot of heat on her also, 26 at strike and she stilled pulled line out for a few minutes. Thats fishing.

We had a monster on that was able to pull TWO jap balls down and out of sight for several minutes at a time. THAT'S 90+ POUNDS OF DRAG. We got the balls back in the boat at one point but the fish made a fast dive back towards the transom angling under the boat. Someone was "asleep" at the wheel
and the boat never got spun around fast enough. ](*,) One of the balls caught between one of the brackets and the engine. Judging by the force of the impact we figured the fish had pulled off but as we were pulling in the line she was still there and apparantly had gotten yoked so hard she decided to come rocketing to the surface. We thought she was gonna jump but she decided to turn and dive FAST. Unfortunately when she came tight on the balls this time the hook pulled.
