NF, what rods do you have on your 80's?

E$, the 80W are only 2#'s heavier then 50W's. Are you using a harness?

Yes of course on the harness. IMHO 2lbs for the reel plus the extre weight of additional line makes if feel like more than that.
(plus my 80lb class rods w heavy aftco buitts weigh a ton.)

Bottom line, for me strong, lightweight outfits is preferred route for stand up. I mean 99% odf the fish we hook are under 250lbs, and can be taken in under 2-3 hrs max.

It's that 1% that kills you, and I guess that 1% is enough to warrant DINOSAUR gear.

It is interesting & enlightening to learn of several guys fishing 80W's on stand up. Something I may have to experiment with as most of the 80's have seen their duty w Rodney only.

Aftco just came out with a short bent butts for 130's....apparently the Northern Tuna fisherman are useing 130's stand up.

E$, an 80 is not over kill for stand up IMO, but I have seen 500 # fish taken with TLD 50's, I beleive that kid from up north caught one out of Sailfish, right?? It can be done, and I think a 50 spooled properly can handle it, the question is, is it worth upgrading if you dont need too, to some it is, to some it isnt.....thats my opinion.....I think the biggest I will go is 80's, and thats onyl if I get a great deal on them. Like you said that 1% is out there, but if you get spooled on a properly rigged 50, you probably arent going to get him with the 80 either

E,
I'll lend you one of my setups if you are fishing on a night that I'm not. You will never go back.

Fuzzy,

Everyone:

I did not carefully read all the posts on this thread, so excuse me if I missed a point or reiterated a point:

For a good reel: like before 50WLRS is an easy choice, but I would recommend an A at the end. ie. 50 WLRSA

If your budget is tight and you choose to stay in the 50W realm, there are other good reels besides Tiagras, so you have options, I would still suggest that you have at least one or two 80 wides in your arsenal. (Strong drags with a 50W body minimum I recommend, but that is just me.) But when you are swordfishing and you send a balloon line or two out there (ssh, you could be so bold as to send it out 200 yds. + if you want, spectra line is good for that.) In those far balloon situations, the prudent angler may choose to still have lots of reserve line and adjust the drag setting accordingly. 80 wides are a naturally wise decision for that situation.

Personally, I really like the 50W form factors, because of the versatility, period. These rods can just as easily be used for lesser species in near shore fishing. When money is not such a significant object of consideration, sure, I would have a complete set if high speed conventionals, like the Torsas, for medium tackle configuration. Robust spinners would there too. But if you have the wherewithall to have dedicated Big game tackle, storage space, etc. what the hay, 80 Wides are where it is at today.

Hopefully, the Commercials using the PLL gear will not ever again be allowed in here: or I will have the sneaking suspicion that some of the 80 wide gear may appear on e-bay at some point in our not to distant future. Food for thought: keep the petitions and the guard up through vigilence.

Haha, RT was thinking the exact same thing.
I wonder if there are tackle shop owners among us that start these
debates :roflmao:

I'm going with Daiwa Sealine Tournament 80W's on Crowder 6', 60-100 lb, short straight unibutt.

The trigger is pulled on the Daiwas but not on the rods yet. Any opinions on whether I should go with 60-130 or 5'6" instead?

Thanks for the help guys, its alot of money and I want to try and get it right the first time.

I have the 6' and that is what my 80 is going on. I like the extra 6'', a lot of times I fish a tip rod straight out the back rod holder, the longer rod makes it easier to clear the transom.

E$, you can try my stand up 80 saturday night :thumleft:
