Default What is this?

Hey Caught this in the dip net, thought it might be a sail without a bill but it had little sharp teeth, and was missing the lower peck fin's.

Any thought's.

I saw those pics already but at the stage they get the fin, they have a bill, unless that is assuming what they look like since it is a drawing and not a photo.

Both blue and white marlin have a sail when they are that size. Blues have no bill at first and small teeth, when they get larger they develop a bill and their dorsal gradually transform from a sail to a pointed pec fin. That's my guess. You can do a search on juvenile blue marlin and it should have some pics.

Hard to tell. Although it has some characteristics of a juvenile blue marlin, I would hazard a guess that it is a baby lancetfish.I have seen quite a lancets, but they were not as tiny as that one.
Just for the record,a baby blue marlin will not have as well formed of a bill at that size of a baby sailfish, but still has a large sail type dorsal such as that one.The dead giveaway of a tiny blue marlin is a chain type lateral line. This is very evident on fish that size. The lateral line looks kind of like elongated olympic rings.
Hope this helps. Thanks for sharing the cool pic.

True. I have seen baby blue marlin with sails. I would have to say blue marlin on this also.

Baby White Marlin below, guessing those little guys we catch out there are white marlin and not sails. Still trying to find the Blue Marlin

That first photo is a probably a LANCETFISH. We call them "sail cudas" jokingly, because that's what you'd get if a sailfish got it on with a cuda

Yes, though to tell. But I'm leaning towards Lancetfish too.

That was us that "tagged" the little guy last night. Actually caught 2 different ones. Funny that they are the first ones I have netted and both in the same night. Sadly those were the only billfish (or fish of any sort) that we were able to catch. 3 slashed baits and that is all. Perfect night though.

It swam away just fine, it was holding on to my finger tip when released. That is how I know it had sharp little teeth.

I have found when they are that small the only real way to be sure of the species is to taste it.
