Default Great Story!!

So.......my buddy Johnny Rodgers who taught me a great deal of what I know about swording fishes on 20' Dusky Controlled slack had 4-80's out last night. A friend who he was fishing with brought a 50 TLD 2 speed with Power Pro so they put it out. Of course .....you know which rod the fish hit. A short time into the battle they were bowed up tight, and the rod snapped(not the first time this has happened to him in a tournament) and the reel shattered. Johnny grabbed gloves and handlined the fish for over an hour on Power Pro........and ended up catching it, 73", and winning $5000 bucks.

Congrats J.R. and crew..........I will try to get the pics tonight or tommorow and post them, they have pics of the whole thing.

Well, in NASCAR, cars have to fit specific body templates in order to pass inspection and be allowed to race. But if they, um, "reshape" some of the body panels during a race due to accidents (rubbin' is racin' Cole) they are not disqualified. I imagine it's the same here. A tackle failure would not be considered an advantage, and therefore shouldn't be disqualified.

TLD50's are known to do that. My good friend had that happen on a blue marlin. Relentless33 had that happen to him on a sword.

I had a customer snap a hollow rod on a 100# yellowfin. I dumped a load of line off the reel attached to the fish onto the deck, cut the line and had my second mate handline the fish. The captain kept us on top of the fish, and my second mate gave line from the pile to the fish when needed. I blood knotted the line to another still-intact rod, and I stuck the gaff in his head 10 minutes later.

I'm surprised they didn't do the same.

Yup, I beleive Shimano has been or may even have fixed that problem, I know they were testing a few new designs for the TLD's. The Graphite comp. that they are made of eventually gets weak and cant handle the drag that we are putting on them and just a little crack near the reel seat and lots of drag and its history......I have seen it happen as well, but they are still a good reel for the $$$

The Graphite comp.
I would never fish them in a tourny. WTF Johnny, you know better than that. Call me next time if you need to borrow some gear.
I thought you were going to 130's
They sure are nice and light though, good for everyday fishing, not for swordys.
Awesome recovery Johnny  :thumright:

Nightfighter, Johnny WAS fishing 130's on another boat.
(he was just relaying the story from his buds on controlled slack.)

We went 3 for 10, but nothing close to the top 3 (303,298,231)

Wait a second, wasnt me, I was riding dirty.......I upgraded to 130 and 80s. It was a friend of mine, Johnny, that I usually fish the tournaments with. He had 4-80s out and then 1 -50

We were told it happened because of a "hairline crack" that we caused. When you tighten the backing screws you can over tighten them and cause this "hairline crack" which causes problems under pressure.

Well JR that sounds about right as well too. I had the bolt on my Tiagra snap on SAT night while fighting the 70 incher to the boat, but no real issues just kept an eye on the reel seat, but it never moved.

Graphite TLD's just don't have the strength of the metal frames. IF truely into the darkside, need to go strong or understand it will happen one day! DUKE

We were lucky as well...Because I was harnessed up tightly to the reel we had no problems. We just heard it and saw it break, but everything stayed right in place because of the pressure that was being applied to it. I probably could've finished fighting the fish under that condition but I got out of the harness as quickly as possible. We fought the fish with the rod on the gunnel and my Dad walking from one side of the boat to the other holding the reel.

We were rewarded with a semi-pumpkin fish that had a tag in it. As well as an amazing story

Yes sir we did...

The fish was tagged 4 years earlier on my Dad's birthday

Weighed an estimated 50 pounds and I don't remember the length measurement. It grew I think around 15 inches and almost 100 lbs. So about 20 pounds a year. Which shows different growth patterns than other fish because we have heard of fish growing about 40-50 pounds in one year.

No actually its ironic.......because we usually fish the tournament together and combine gear to come up with a 20' boat capable of taking on Jaws or Moby Dick (3 harpoons, 80s, 130s, bangsticks, jap balls, ect) But I had to keep my crew from the last win since he wasnt in town for that one. We spoke earlier in the morning and I was like damn I only got 4 rods.....he was like $hit me too........if you ever fished with either of us.......4 rods does not cut it. We both said there is no way were putting out a 50, cus you know what will happen. Sure enough.

The same thing that happen to jr is what happened to JR. The back just cracked and he angler was still harnessed up and the rod attached with line from the reel going through the rod.

No more 50's in the spread since the sea monster's keep getting hooked on that rod and leaving the 80's alone. I am telling you they swim up to the boat check things out then slam the bait on the smallest Rod

Same thing hapened to us Saturday, only two solid hook ups were on the 50, they just played with the baits that we on the 80's.

Flyers Up, I have a pair of Penn international 80's on very nice 80lb class ++ STAR rods (STOUT combos.)

Would sell for approx $500.00 each,

Call me Crazy, but I prefer stand up on JB w 50's for fish to 250lbs or so.
