Is this normal

Went on the north drift last night with a friend. Went 0 for 3. I have a question for you guys, I was fishing my rods off the front, one hit while I was letting the bait down, line went complete slack, and I couldn't get tight. Then next thing I know the fish darts under the boat with lp in chase. Then gone. Next bite tip rod 350' saw it bounce once ran to it, then nothing for about 45 seconds, then another bounce, alittle weight, then line goes slack. So I start reeling and the fish jumps 25ft in front of the boat, then gone. So to get to my question does this happen often when the fish swims strait up? What can I do next time to get a hook in her?

If you are dropping a bait down, and all of a sudden it stops going out or you see the line accumulate on the surface as if no weight...

Then the fish has grabbed it and taken the pressure of the weight off.. REEL REEL REEL. You will get tight most of the time.

ON the tip rod issue, how far back are you putting your weight? If you put the weight back futher and fish some heat at the strike, you should be glued to fish the most of the time.

We can't catch them all, but we can improve...

Honest answer is that it happens ALL the time...Do yourself a favor and crank as fast as you can whenever something "not normal" happens. Sometimes a sword will whack the bait and become entangled momentarially...If you crank hard you have a decent chance of hooking the fish...But if you come tight to the lead and that is all then let the bait back out slowly and sometimes she will come back to eat. "Feel" is a huge part of all types of fishing and swording is no different.

The first 4 swords I caught were all onboard in under 3 minutes each. The line went slack, we reeled fast, got tight, he swam to the boat, and he got a gaff in his head. Largest of those 4 was about 100-125#, smallest was about 50#. I haven't had one of the "big, mean, whoop your ass for hours" swords on. My swords have wanted to die.

As some other have posted already.....It happens ALL the time. For some reason most of the Swords that we have caught come up to the surface after taking the bait. That's why its important to watch your balloon/float closely. Once you see the balloon "flip" ...REEL LIKE HELL! and get tight ASAP!
I had one wack a tip rod. As soon as I pick the rod up the line goes slack. I start reeling like hell and here comes Mr. Swordy coming straight at the boat with an LP trailing behind. He goes straight under the boat and jumps clear out of the water on the opposite side of the boat. The hook pulls one hour later. That's Swordfishing. Have fun!

We lost one Friday night to the same story. Balloon flips over, my rookie on watch looks at it for 30 seconds and thinks "I am supposed to reel fast if the balloon flips, is this what he was talking about ?". By the time he reeled tight, we got a 20 second pull on the drag, and he was a brief memory.
My fault, I should have been on watch with him to show him the example.

That sword is gonna feel something odd once it starts dragging the weight. Since the weight wants to fall down, the fish is gonna want to swim the opposite direction. UP. It's probably also a reason why they tend to jump early in a fight. Once ya get tight, the direction of pull changes and they'll head deep.

I agree 100%

I have noticed that when I place a deep tip it will usually pull a few clicks on the drag or sing. I don't know if its the wave action on the boat that makes the squid dance, but the tip rod has been my best consistant rod. My 2c
