I have done well and terrible on both winds for swords.

East winds always bring everything closer to shore and make for better fishing.

A west wind in general is not the best fishing conditions for southeast florida.

They crushed 'em on the west wind last night!!!!

Best advice I can give you is that you can't catch 'em for the couch!!!

I haven't noticed the wind direction being a big factor in swordfishing.

It does seem to affect nearshore fishing. East wind will move bait closer to shore, and bring in cleaner water. For dolphin fishing, it will help weedlines to form and move towards shore.

To add yet another point of confusion to the mix....

I have to say that I have caught them in any and all wind directions. However, east and southeast do seem to produce better results. I have observed on numerous occasions that the bite has completely shut down when the wind changed direction.

That has lead me to believe that barometric pressure may be play a role in all this.

The best thing I can suggest for anyone to do is to be as anal retentive as you can be and keep track of everything in as much detail as you possibly can: Time of year, moon phase, moon rise and set times, tides, pressure, wind direction, current speed, degree of drift, water temp, air temp, location of hits, what color t-shirt you have on, what you ate for breakfast, and what you were doing at the time of the hit. :roflmao:

Over the course of enough trips you may begin to see that some times are definitely better for fishing that other times are better for running up a bar tab. :drunken:

The only problem with having an idea of some of the better times to fish is that mother nature has a strange habit of doing her damndest to prevent you from wanting to or even being able to head out.

I can offer you a prime example right now. I was planning on fishing this entire upcoming week. Now go look at the the forecast. ](*,) uker:

Capt Ollie, Unfortunately I don't fish often enought to observe any patterns (6 to 12 X per year). Can you share your experience with the above parameters you mentioned for us "weekend warriors"? Thanks in advance.

To be as forthcoming as I would have to be with my answer to make everyone happy with my answer........it would require nothing short of torture. I have given an extensive amount of info on this forum and have actually be criticized for this by some for this. You really wouldn't believe some of the crap I've dealt with. I could probably write a book on what I think is the best time to fish and ultimatlely sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If the fish aren't where you are its not going to matter how perfect you think the conditions are. I've been out there on nights when I would have bet my life we would see action and never even got a nibble and other nights that I thought were just going to suck and we were in non-stop action. The bottom line is that you have to fish when you can and the weather lets you because your not going to catch them from the couch. If you spend enough time on the forums and you know other guys that fish when you don't you can get just as much of the info if you do a little reverse research on what was going on that night. For example, you can go back and look at Fowey Rocks and it gives you an hour by hour breakdown of the conditions that go back 24 hours. If you know what time the bite was just go back and look at what was happening with all those things at the approx. time. Most of the other info can be found the same way even if it is after the fact. By the way, the moon rises 51 minutes later everyday.
To get as obsessive as I have been known to be about these things is just plain ridiculous for the average recreational angler.
Recreational fisherman have a lot less riding on the success of a trip than commercial guys and to a lesser extent the charter captains. The charter guys are getting paid for the trip no matter what, while my success depends on me putting weight on the scales.
The main governing factor of when I fish is the weather conditions. Plain and simple. If everything else is how I like it to be then that just happens to be a bonus. All that does is change how long I may stick it out if its slow and I feel they may turn on because of something I've seen in the past.
A lot of the info on when the bite may be better is just general knowledge that you can get from just going back in this forum and just reading everything you can get your hands on that pertains to this fishery. The info is mind-boggling.
One thing thats always fascinated/frustrated me is that I'll be damned how that most of the time when I think the bite may be hot the weather makes it impossible to fish.

No kidding about the stream and it looks to be going downhill in a bad way for next week.

Heres a point of interest......I wish I would have fished last night....heard from some people that it was pretty decent. I thought it might be good based on the fact that the frontal boundary was going to push through without the usual utter nastiness that comes with such a passage. I've had some REALLY good nights under those circumstances. Barometeric pressure......I think.

My reason for not going....the wife was off and we went to dinner and a movie. ](*,)

Any time you gather data a pattern will develope. Just like the lotto results, certain balls come up more then others.

If the weather is good and life events align correctly, I'm dragging bait.

The seas weren't bad down here in South Miami. Most of the night it was 2' with a maybe 3 every now and again. We did have a squall pass close to the south of us and we had a little rain. About 11 PM we had some good winds and 4 footers for about 20-30 minutes. After midnight the seas laid down to 1' and glassy on the bay.

Caught and released a pup (circle hook) on the 150' line and had another bait slashed on the 350' line. Going to try it again tonight, same party.

My reason for not going tonight is because be want to continue with the same party. Tonight is family night and we are cooking up a nice Paella Velenciana.

Let's see, we have some of our locally caught fare: swordfish, dolphin and shrimp. To kick it up a notch with a little bit more variety I will add some bay scallops and some NZ Mussels on top. Sorry, by special request, I am not adding the usual ingredient of Calamari. (I think the friends have seen me pulling squids out of the deep freeze one too many times: perhaps they are thinking that they may be getting some 250g size baits. C'est la vie, we'll serve up some squid the next time around)

Here is a sample ingredient list from a prior Paella:

Let's see how well this one comes out . Buen Provecho
