Default First New England Sword

This is my first time submitting a post on this site. I am from Scituate, MA and I fish giant tuna and the canyons here in the Northeast. Last winter, I was lucky enough to fish with Capt. Dean Panos and in two trips we got 4 beautiful swordfish. I was hooked. Swordfishing Central has kept my interest in swords alive and I have learned a lot studying all your posts and discussions. Thanks!!

This past weekend I fished Oceanographers canyon. It was 1 am and I had caught a number of yellowfin tuna on my swordlines and a few small makos. They chewed up all my squid so I tried a dead mackerel. I set the bait at 100ft with a blue LP and blue strobe. It sat there as a tiprod for about 5 minutes as I looked for some more balloons and cyalume sticks. The rod started to jump strangely and then buckled over. My brother Tom came tight on him as he came straight up behind the boat. What a sight!! He was all lit up purple and mad as hell. He saw the boat and just SCREWED!! He went up under the 58 foot Waterdog. I backed off on the drag and shoved the rod under the water. Capt. Doug Jones quickly pivoted the boat and cleared the mess. About thirty minutes later a beautiful, fat 58 inch fish came over the transom. The whole wiring process and harpoon shot was caught on video. We proceeded to fill the boat with 50-80lbs yellowfin, but the sword was clearly the highlight of the trip.

Thanks to Captain Dean Panos and all you guys for sharing your techniques!!

Capt. Frank Pitten

I suggested not too long ago that people post their videos, maybe you can be the first. Love to see it.

Video is in standard VHS format. I will work with Mike to see what needs to happen to digitize it so that it can be put up on the site.

58 inch. That is not including the sword is it? What would it have weighed? The body length was 4ft 10" ?
Musta been fun on those tuna.... what BS line were you using? 50lb, 30lb or 80lb?
Cheers,
Stu.

When measuring a sword we look at length from the fork of the tail to the lower jaw. Obviously the sword is an extra 30 inches or so and the tail would make overall lenght much more.

Fishing in the canyons of the Northeast we use mostly standup 50's with 80lbs line and a few Penn 70 standups with 100lbs line. Most of the fish we catch at night are yellowfin and albacore tuna from 40-80lbs. We do sometimes see bigeye tuna up to 250+ and large makos and tiger sharks. This year someone caught a 502lbs swordfish and Capt. Dean Panos from Miami caught a 300lbs+ sword fishing with my friend Capt. Damon Sacco on the Castafari.
