Other Species is Swordfish Territory

Greetings forum,
Long time viewer first time writer. I'm based out of Chicago but my old man lives in Delray and I try and shoot down every weekend I can (especially in the winter!) to get out on the water... during the dog days of winter when I'm chained to my desk I find solace in the Sword forum reading your stories and living vicariously through you all. You have no idea how good you have it down there!!!

Anyway, I was curious if anyone has tried drifting livies or squid during the day circa the 50 line for other species (Dolphin, Tuna, Wahoo, Shark etc.) and if there was any documented success in doing so??

Welcome mate.

We have setup early a few times out on the 50 and have had sailfish grab the shallow live baits, several dolphin at all depths, and even a couple wahoo on the flat lines.

The 50 line is just an imaginary line for reference, however there are several canyons and drop offs that make it a good spot to stop and put out a spread at night.

You are always better off to fish the color change / edge if you are looking for "other species" in my opinion.

We often go MUCH further out looking for weedlines and mahi. 20-30 miles. (sword grounds are about 12 off) Haven't tried just drifting out there in the daytime. We have better luck while running or trolling actively looking for floating debris that may hold fish. Some guys have tried deep dropping for daytime swords, but the results have not been very encouraging.

That kills me. We'd often fish 20-30 miles on an 8 hour snapper trip and be in about 200' of water. To think that that is far! *sigh*

We didn't start thinking about swords until 50 miles straight out.

I've done well trolling plastics well before dropping the first sword baits on the 50. I'm sure there is some significant upwelling going on around the humps so..as the saying goes...where there is bait there are fish...I would sure like to try live chumming in 1300 ft. of water. I know that there are sharks galore out in the deep and I have heard of quite a few Yellowfins caught as bycatch while swording, but, as far as a sure thing, Dolphin are present all year long. If you get out there during the day and fish effictivley please keep me posted. God knows I need a reason to leave work earlier than I already do...
