Default Swordfish Caught During Day On Kelly Fleet

Here the boat hooked into a 100 pounder and landed it during the day.

The anlger was jigging ballyhoo on a 20lb spinning outfit.

No pics yet, but cool.

My buddy mates for the atlantis, the party boat that came upon the sword. According to what he had to say, an older lady with a baitrunner 6500 spooled with 20pd mono no leader with a jig head with a hole ballyhoo trailing behind it on the bottom. They started the drift at 250' and didnt get the hook up until 160'. Anyways the fish came right up running hard gave two pretty ariel jumps and thought it was a sailfish and the reel was almost spooled and spent a good hour backing down on the fish to gain line, my buddy helped reel in the line keeping tention for the older lady and got the fish just under the boat realizing it wasnt a sail and saw it was Mr. Swordfish himself this is where he stayed for the next half hour where he got hung up on something underneath the boat which lead to them breaking off, but they did get him up to the surface one time to see him all lit up purple as could be, he said. It gets even better ! The fish hung around for another 10 minutes on the surface laughing in there face as they tried to pitch more baits to him. The fish was estimated to be between 100-150pds, the fish was not so long but very fat according to him.

The ironic thing is my buddy who mates for that boat, I took him the previous friday night of this weekend on his first swordfish adventure which ended up with just a quick fight with a shark that cut through our 250pd leader and a squid that was stripped at the end of the night, so im sure he was very extactic to see such a thing as this.

thanks for clearing that up.. i couldnt imagine hooking a 150lb sword on 20lb gear on a boat that is not easy to run and chace it...

You figure they cant really spool you going straight down, but can get you down pretty quick if you can chase them.

We actually hooked one on a kite rod about 10 years ago off miami. it took the kite bait and came towards the boat and the small circle hook never got set. Was pretty cool as we caught 3 sails that day and to see the difference in the bill size was crazy.

Well thats something I can believe because every year theres always a hand full of swordfishing caught in sailfish tournaments that were caught on a kite bait. So thats something thats not hard to believe either. I even had a buddy who had one come swim by his boat while catching bait off bug light a few years ago, he said he was a monster and wished he could have free gaffed him.
