Hey guys. I spooled up my two TI 80W's with 1000yds of 200 lb hollow core JB Spectra, to 30 yds of 130# mono for a shock absorber using the chinese finger trap method, to my pig tail swivel. The two TI 50W's that I've got have 750 yds of 130# hollow core to 130# mono to the swivel.
I know that it's a little over board but if I hook up with something that's OH MY GOD! size again, I don't want to be spooled. I've got the reels rigged up, now I just need to wrap some new sticks. All of my rods are Calstar graphiters and there really isn't too much flex in them and they will not give too much when a fish wants to take a hard run. It's killing my back every time I hook up on a decent size mako and he decides to kick my butt for a few hours. So, I'm deciding to go with glass for the swordies. Which rods do you guys prefer to use with the 50W's and the 80W's and why? Graphite or Glass? |

I personally prefer fiberglass rods in the 50/80 class with oversize windon rollers.
Bicayne Rods make some nice ones: http://www.biscaynerod.com/catalog/s.../stand-up.html I have fought some very very big swords on my rods and have had no problems. |

I second fiberglass rods.. Thats all I use also.. most of my tackle is in the 80/130 class for swords. YOu never know when the monsters are going to creep up.. so Im ready for them..
For line I use Sufix Titanium to 300lb leader (15 feet). |

Well guys I decided on building a bent butt rod with AFTCO rollers for standup fighting. I've never built one, and need some advice on the lenght of the rod.
I'm about 6 foot, 200lbs. What length rod seems to be the most comfortable to use and still put a hurting on the fishies in a long battle? I'm assuming shorter is better. |

You may want to reconsider the bent butt. I have a 130 class rod and they are a real bear to hang on to when you have a really big fish. I have swapped it out for a stright but. At the very least, get a system that you can swap out the butt to a streight if you dont like the bent butt.

Thanks for the advice CptBob. I went flying around the islands yesterday and saw a couple of large makos and some swords. I'm going to borrow a bent butt from a friend of mine to try it out on some of those big puppies and see how much of a butt kicking I get.

bent butts are ok for fighting out of the rodholder or chair, but you really want a standup rod with a straight butt when fighting these swords that dive down a thousand feet.
I'm looking to my left of the site and I see we have a full moon coming... only if the seas would let up!!! |

Take a look at AFTCO's mini bent butts. They made these spacificly for stand up fighting of very large fish. I know of several individuals who used them with large blues in excess of 1,000 pounds in Midera when the run of granders was in full speed. There is a hand full of yachts who use them for large yellowfin out of San Diego also. They work very well. Call AFTCO and ask for Greg Stotesbury (949) 660-8757, he would be more than happy to assist you with any information you needed.
P.S. Did you hitch a ride with a spotter plane when you saw the Purple ones several days back? I had a friend get two stripies on Wednesday and I know the stick boats are still scratching a few out. |
