Harpoon recomendation needed

Just started swordfishing a few weeks ago. I definitely see the need for a harpoon to safely land the bigger and more active fish. I need some recomendations from the seasoned veterans as to what harpoon I should invest in. I have seen them in fiberglass and aluminum, 7' to 16' long, arrow heads and shank heads in stainless and brass, stainless cables, lead core lines, and poly balls big enough to float the Titanic :shock: . I run a 36' center console x 10' beam with a gunnel height of 30" above the water line. Any insight on what brand and specs for a harpoon would be most appreciated. These things ain't cheap, so I would like to get it right on the first pass through my checkbook.

There are a number of different darts out there, The bigggest thing is the size. They go 8-16' i believ. I have a swordslashed adjustable harpoon, it adjusts from 8-16' I believe its the only one that does that. As far as the dart it self, Bronze or stainless it doesn't really matter, I think having one of both is best. Bronze for swords, and stainless for Mr. Mako. MAKE SURE if you have wire between the dart and rop it is coated. The non-coated can cut through the meat and cut of your boat. As far as the way you rig the roap mot people just cleat it off, But on a big or hot fish a Jap ball is the way to go. They are not your avg. pollyball and will not break down to 1000'. A poly ball will defleat after about 90' i believe. The best thing to do is go visit Tek at reelproshop.com or call him Phone: (561) 654-7873 He can get you setup in the right direction.

On a side note I have a swordslashed adjustable harpoon I am selling completely rigged. at 8' is wont fit in my undergunnel rod holders, So I am going with a 2 peice 12'. Goodluck

There are many great harpoons out there.

I REALLY like the one made by Reliable, and the price is right on them too!

They have some weight up front, easy to replace shafts, & float.

After 20 years of sticking fish, I have never had any issues.

They also make some pretty good gaffs, fighting belts, etc.
