Swordfish gaffing: the short version.

Motors running! Should always have 'em ON when hooked up, in my opinion.

Straight gaff is the riskiest, and should be reserved for when the fish is somewhat exhausted. Aim for the head. Then sink a second straight gaff near the tail to really control the fish. Tail-rope isn't a bad idea either.

Flying gaff... can be used when the fish is more active. Give the rope some length so if the fish freaks out, it won't beat the $hit out of your hull. Again, aim for the head.

Dart... in one gill plate and out the other! Stick 'em as soon as the fish is in range. Allow plenty of rope attached to a cleat, or use a poly-ball.

When they stop talking about you then you have to worry!

And for the record, get motors running quick! I had a captain recently just sit there and watch while a sword tried commiting suicide! First fish he lost from to much boat movement, second fish he was afraid to move!!!
