Default quick flashing strobes over the sword grounds???

I forgot to mention on my previous post that I saw something very new last night. I saw a string of 7-8 blinking lights that ran roughly North to South approximately 1 to 2 miles east of 3 lumps. The lights were quick flashing stobes that were spaced about 1/4 mile apart. The line of lights looked to be about 1-2 miles long depending on whether or not they were connected.

I'm no expert, but all 5 on the boat all assumed the same thing. Did anyone else see these strobes around 11 pm? Even though it was quite bright due to the moon they were easy for us to see. Ideas?

What you saw was a guy that has a commercial permit to deploy five beacons. He goes out very often and is out of Gove Harbor Marina. A very different way of fishing. I belieive that he has to hand line in his catch. Five hooks per beacon ? I thought that it was a tug in tow. Of course my eyes were bugging out after a few vodkas. Not very sporting but sometimes $$$$. Tough way to make a living !

Is it OK to run between these beacons?

2 hooks per bouy max, and until youve hand lined a 200+ lber, i wouldn't say it isn't sporty. I haven't done it, but i know someone who has. It is hard hard work, and a hard way to make $$

Well said Barry.

Bouy gear is a great way to produce fish and you can get them to the boat relatively fast. It's a lot of work.

I've often wondered... What makes buoy gear more productive?

5 buoys = 10 unattended hooks in the water. Typical rec sword boat has 5 hooks in the water that are constantly monitored, checked, rebaited, adjusted, etc.

Should we just hang circle hooked baits off the gunnel with locked drags?

The fact that a bouy makes a bait look much more natural. The bouy picks up almost no wind, so the squid glides through the water. also there is no weight so if the fish picks up a bait he has no idea hes hooked for a lot of feet.

Barry's comments are right on. I will add...... 5 bouys does not necessarily mean 10 hooks in the water. Usually it is going to mean 5 hooks in the water if they know what they are doing. Fish fighting fish pulls hooks. 5 bouys is not gonna be that productive and but does help a seriously hardcore addicted swordfisherman pay for a little of the gas . What makes it more productive. On any given night you can set a spread of 5 bouys maybe deep/maybe shallow......move away put down some tip rods in different area and test alot of water till you get in the fish. This is hard work but allows you to locate the fish and then concentrate your efforts in a tighter area until you get in em and then its game on. It is by no means, not sporty, anybody that wants to think other wise go out and fish a 200' leader from your snap swivel and bring in a nice fish.

I cant speak for all the bouy guys but the dude out front(lighthouse/deerfield/boca) fishing the 5 bouys is a cool azz mf........he is hardcore as they come and was a great rod and reel fisherman before he got his bouys

Didn't even think of the fact that on those no wind nights when you have trouble getting a full spread out bouys wouldn't be a problem.

Like i said I have not done it yet, but want to try it out one day for sure! If nothing else to work on leadering fish!

When I regain some of my brain functions lost due to lack of sleep I'll come back and write a whole thread about the bouys and tell you guys whatever you wanna know. I've been on a marathon of fishing/diving these last few days to make up for all the work I've lost from this non stop chit weather.

PS. Fished 8 bouys last night and two rods for a total of 18 baits. Fished from 8:30 to 1. For my efforts I was rewarded with 4 slashed baits. So to all of you that think we slay them all the time........your dead wrong, and when it sucks......IT JUST SUCKS. My love/hate affair with the night of the full moon continues........

AND by the way, just because its been bothering me somewhat since I first read it......... to all of you out there that think that handlining a fish like this isn't sporting........I have only one thing to say to you.......... :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

You just have no idea.
