Decided to try my luck on the other side of the gulf stream Saturday night. Left mid day Saturday to try a little deep drop action first. Caught the largest queen I had ever seen. Lots of nice size yellow eye. Had to travel sixteen miles in the rain to get to a spot I thought would catch us the big sword. Set up in 1,900 ' of water about 9:30 and again it was pouring rain. Got the first line out at 150' deep and started to rig the second for deployment. No soon as I was about to attach the squid rig buit the first set up started sceaming out. The line was only in the water for about six minutes. Needless to say after about three and a half hours we had a seventy two incher in the boat. This fish was so fat that it took three of us to hoist it over thae rail. My guess is that the fish was pushing 300lb's but without a scale it was difficult to have an accurate weight especially since I was quite knocked out after that long battle. I have caught fish this size before but seems that they were not as heavy. In the past I saw a formula on this forum that would give a good approximation of a swords weight. Does any one have that formula. I will trade my spot on the other side for it. I think that the sword population and size is much greater over there. I am new to swording as I moved to Miami from NYC five years ago after getting hitched to a cuban girl. Don't feel to sorry for me as the sword thing is making me get over it. She was nice enough top let me get a last night in before a scheduled C section on Tuesday.
I would post a picture but not sure how to. I have made digital images of our night our. Any help I would appreciate it. |

Stag11:
Congratulations on catching a nice fish. Generally, I am not too ambitious on accolades for getting a nice fish in the boat: but I am happy for your success when you do, and you can share the results with your family and friends. ... But just in case... In case you don't already know by now, you should be sure to make the consciencious comment that you had the proper Bahamian permissions to fish, on the other side. After all, once you go to the other side your are fishing in the Bahamian EEZ. And it is so EZ to be welcomed to the Islands of the Bahamas. It is only a function of basic courtesy to pay your dues: clear customs regularly, keep your fishing permits intact and be nice to the locals and respect their suggested customs. You can always lead by example, but trash disposal should be done properly. Don't drop conch shells from their severed mollusk organisms in open space: drop them adjacent to land. So what's wrong with a Cubana (Chic) anyway? It might be the best seasoning you can get, if you like fishing so much. RT |

Risk Taker
But of course all Bahamian rules and regs were followed. I grew up under the Guliani regime. He cleaned up my city and tought us that following the law makes a better city. Living down here for five years tought me that the same lesson could be learned and benfited from. All check in requirements, permit procedures and reporting protocol were followed as should be. |
