Default ? for Relentless

Was that your TLD that was broke in the pic section. If so did you try to have it replaced? I had one do the same thing with only 12lbs of drag on it.

Yes sir, don't be worried. It wasn't the fish that broke it, it was us  What we did wrong was when we tightened the bolts on the back of the reel, while mounting on the rod (try to visual it) the silver screw type things. You over tightened them enough to put a hairline crack in the composite material. The fish did the rest.

We talked to Tom Greene from Custom Rod and Reel about it in depth and he asked us if we took a screwdriver to it and the answer was yes, there was our problem. We didn't rediculously tighten them but we overtightened them enough to do that little bit of damage which led to major damage. All they have to be is snug on there and you won't have a problem.

Hope this helps,

Relentless

Those reels still shouldn't break. It seems like they would make the bottom of the reel seat out of a different material. We switched everything over to Tiagras. Sucked spending the extra $$$$, but I think it is worth the money especially at the moment of truth!
Did that reel bust your guides when it came loose?

Broadbill: Nothing moved when it broke, I was harnessed up with the rod and clips to the reel, everything was properly fit tight and the reel stayed in place. Immediately my dad grabbed the reel and I clipped out. We fought the fish by me holding the rod on a on a glove on the gunnel an him walking across the boat and winding back to the rod. Pretty intense for 45 minutes, it was pretty crazy when the fish felt like making those runs every once in a while. I think your thoughts on the Tiagras are absolutely right. I know we are getting the 50w's soon.

I'll find the pics and post them in a minute, not a problem

We had the samething happen. About 1hr into the fight it broke, we tied another rod and reel into the line and caught the fish. I know that it was not the fish that broke the reel, but I do think maybe we over did the screws or maybe with the reel on the harness and the angler pushing down the rod might have broke it. We made the move to the penn 70s and maybe that won't happen again. Thanks for the reply. I felt that the fish did not do it.

Like I said in the original thread, I've seen the same problem with TLD 50's when fighting blues. Switching to gold gives you a clicker worth having (since you can't hear a TLD clicker if there's much any noise), and a reel that won't shear off the rod.
