Boil the ends in a kettle and make sword bill broth.

So....are you gonna share that info? Hook us up. My dock is stinking and the neighbors would like for me to learn how to properly cure the bills I have soaking.

Wow... you dug up an old post! I still haven't done anything with all the bills I've collected. They're lining the bottom of my bait freezer, a foot deep. Need to find a dock I can hang 'em from.

Yes, I did a search for bill curing/treating and found your old post.
Someone mentioned sanding. Anyone else sand them? Someone also mentioned that bleaching is a bad idea. Good to know as I was just about to try bleaching one.

if u r going to get the bill painted there is no reason to do this but if u r not after u let it sit in the water for like 3 weeks take it out and pour some bleach and hydrogen peroxide on it and let it sit in it for no more than an hour take it out wash it off then let it dry out in the sun. this will kill all of the stink and also turn it perfectly white!!!!!!

I had it right from the start. The original post had more to do with which side gets displayed, not which is the top. In any case... it's an old subject, and I know the answers now.

I have kept the natural color and added some artwork to these. i cured them in the canal by letting the fish and crabs eat at them then putting them in a bleach solution for a couple of days. they came out perfect...no smell and pure white until i sanded the crap out of them to get a perfectly smooth surface and the natural color.

These were done with scrimshaw for my dad. carved into then inked over. they came out real nice but are a B*@TCH to get done. i then seal them up for protection and shine. they look great on the mantle. have done about 5 so far.

Got it, Thanks again for the info!!

I think you are right about it taking some time to get the feel of it. I have yet to try it and I can already imagine the fine detail of doing this method!!!

Thanks again!!
