ya i've just never seen it that packed, but i dont get out that much so.. i was amused.

the hooks were mustad 7699 i think??? 11/0. I got them at LMR and they were about 45 bucks for 10. Had a nice offset, not sure if LMR did that or if they came that way. I figured i'd give em a shot

Good job. :salut: It's the really big blobs on the radar that you have to be concerned about.

Got Tanqueray No. 10 ? 4

Those hooks look like they are offset. I do not believe that they come that way out of the box. I also use the very shiny ones like Mustad 7691S (Stainless steel hooks). I will get a box of 10 and bring them to my workshop and offset them in the same direction as my LP 9/0 offset. I don't know it the direction of offset makes a difference or not, so I just stick to the formula. Sometimes the bend of the hook seems to open up a bit during the home-gggrown offset process, so you nee to apply a little bit of press inward, besides the side ward forces. This lever can take a substantial amount of force: the last time I looked at my vice and it was cracked. I do not think that it happened when I ws bending hooks. But that was the last thing I was doing before I noticed the vice failure. (Maybe my Father-in-law came over and put the gorilla grip on that thing: but I am sure he would have told me so. )

Needless to say, I haven't dropped Gold overboard, but I do need to get a new vice. I've been meaning to get one that has the pipe grip accessory anyhow.

Do you keep any more squids in the freezer compartment when you go? Why not rig up a big one, a gift to Poseiden, while you're at it. Maybe a 500#er will bite, maybe just a greedy rat. But it does vary the spread a bit.

Thanks for the report.

The hooks come like that in the box, Finest Kind catalog has photo. I was always told not to bend ss hooks, it will weaken the ss makes it brittle, does anyone have info on this? Swordfish 123 have you ever used a 2 hook rig?

nah, i have had a high hookup ratio so far rigging them just like that, but like i have said before, i dont get to go that often. I've only had one fish pull the hook out of all my hits, the only other sword i've lost was on this last trip and the line was cut on the running gear.

this was the first time i've let the baits slow thaw in a brine all day before using them. not sure if it makes a difference but they seemed to maybe hold up a little more. I only go swording once every few months if im lucky so when i go i rig my squids very carefully and make sure everything is perfect. I also add a little somethin somethin to the mix an hour or so before they hit the water.

I noticed the hook placement on thse squid; have you ever had the squid fall down and ball up on the hook?

AuSUmII-

THe length was 46", I'd call him maybe 50-60lbs. Ya, it was on our boat.

300lb momoi. I've never had the bait ball up, i use thread to sew the top of the mantle to a crimp with half hitches. It takes a while, but the result is a perfectly straight squid if you take your time and do it right.

Rigged very similar to mine, but I put the hook into the head through the mouth and then out the side of the head like you do. This causes less squid in the gap of the hook (1/2 to 1/3 of the head vs the full head) and hopefully allows for a better hook set.Never hurts to add some blush (red Dye) either to dress her up ;o) ...DUKE
