How far away do you guys set your leads from the bait. Also, do you guys snap the LP light directly on the snap swivel or on the main line or leader?
I keep getting many bites but not many hook-ups. About 10 or so trips but only two fish / one keeper.

We put our leads about 15' from the bait on a break-away hooked to a large sampo swivel. The l.p. is about 30' from the bait clipped to the windon. As stated above, lots of ways to go this one works well for us. Good luck!

I fish 2 different ways.
1. Light 20 ft away right on the swivel, followed by the lead about 2-5 ft from the light 2. Light 40- 50 ft away on a longline clipped to the dacron of a wind on (just started this windon thing, not sure I like it), followed by the lead 5ft away from the light. Note: May just lengthen leader and do away with the windon, as I am not a huge fan of the wind-ons. Many different ways to do it.

100ft from the bait is great and woks very well, and the light at the top of the laeder about 20ft or a little shorter but make sure it is secure and cannot get your main line and cut you off. It all works but there is always room for improvement so keep your ears open and try different ways to fit what you want... Andy

Thank you all for the responses/tips.
What I do is set the bait with the 300 lbs mono leader about 10 feet from the snap swivel. Just about six feet away from the bait on the mono I snap a blue/green duralum stick. At the snap swivel I attach the LPw/ small green or blue strobe attached. Then between 15 to 20 feet from the swivel/LP I set the lead sinker (24 or 36 oz) via breakaway. I would think with this set-up, from what I have read and seen, would work. I guess I'll just keep trying. Do you guys see anything wrong with this, or something that I might be doing with this set-up that is scaring the fish away/not inticing the bite?

Like 123 mentioned, there are lots of ways...
I prefer to keep things as simple as possible, both for setup and disconnect. So, I hang my weight from the bottom of the LP with either a rubberband or telephone wire... about 30ft from the bait, using a longline clip. To bulk up the line and keep the LP from sliding, I wrap/tie a rubberband around the spectra, and pinch the LL clip onto that. Easy on, easy off. No need for someone to yank the wire or break a band when fighting a fish. Just take off the LL clip/LP/weight in one shot. But, that's just my opinion. I may start using those strobes too, right at the snap, about 6ft above my bait. |

from what i was reading you want the bait just to the outside of the halo of your light. the light is more for attracting bait to your area and when a swordie swims by the bait that was attracted by your light splits leaving your bait to get munched on by said fish. also the general population seems to agree on 75+ feet away for the weight. my setup is duraloom on the windon connection to the mono(sorry tek) and the lp between that and the weight. still batting .500, 6 trips 3 fish. >>,))))),('>---

My vote is for the light 30 feet from the bait. Preferably a Seamaster, sporting 4 l.e.d.'s, its light output puts the electrolumes to shame. As far as the sinker goes, the further the better.

Icagator, your rigging procedure looks good except that duralume 6 ft. away from the bait. In my opinion, it seems to be too close to the bait. I think that it would do more harm than good when you place the light that close to the bait. Especially if you are using the twin light stick. Try putting it at least 15 ft. away from the bait. The brighter the moon, the closer to the bait you want your light. With little or no moon, place the light farther away from the bait.
I agree with Uncle Buck that it is easier to connect and disconnect the light/sinker at the same time. |

Here is my setup and I think it works great. I put the LP about a foot from the dacron on my wind on which is about 28 feet away from the bait. I use a snap swivel on the LP. I connect it with the small rigging bands. I snap the swivel around the rubberband and around the main line. This enables you to just reel the light right into the rod and it breaks and falls to the snap swivel no pulling touching or stopping required. I then attach my weight to a wax loop about 50 feet past my wind on via telephone wire. I use about 2 feet preferably and twist it real tight on the weight end and about 8 -10 twists on the wax loop end. I dont like loosing weights on small fish. This setup enables you to have someone on the deck to EASILY grab the weight as it swings up, jerk it and its off. and worse case you can AGAIN keep reeling and it will fall off. just make sure it does not hit the boat!
