I was talking to a friend that told me about how his jugs started to drift together Sat night in the tourney. They start reeling thinking it was a fish only to find out it was some ones buoy gear with no lights on
Tangled his whole spread and messed up his fishing while they untangled. On Sat when I started running south for my 2nd drift almost ran over a boat with no lights on at all  not even a light in the water.I started turning there way and hit them with the spot light did not see anyone and was ready to call the coast guard. Then after 2 or 3 min they turned on there running lights and a flash light. What is the deal with theses guys were they hiding in the middle of 30 other boats that here there?I hope I am not the first guys to hit one these idiots.I even had radar they were inside the clutter ring about 1/2 mile south of me.A little more to the right and no moon they would have been run over.

You know someone out of 70 boats or whatever is going to screw up, thats just the odds. We saw a few boats like that also. I put my bow on one of them as we were running to put a little scare on em.

QQ all I can say is that is wasn't me (never is) with the unlit gear......thats insane....it's supposed to be lit with strobe. Just curious but can you find out if it had a radar reflector on it? In any case you would have to be an idiot to fish gear on a tournament night.

The only reason the gear was dark was most likely because they were in the tourney. Why else would you fish dark :???:

we saw a few returns on the radar that we thought was bouys. could not see a boat with returns showing them to be inside a quarter mile, less than 1300 feet.

Had the same kind of problem Saturday nite, 3 times. On the way out it was dusk/dark and I passed an anchored boat on Pacific Reef and caught a glimpse of something in the water. No dive flags on the boat and a "hooka rig" with a 12" dive flag 18" off the water about 200yds from the boat. Missed him by 200' , thank god, not that close.
THEN, about 10:45, I was running south to make another drift and saw a blip on the radar. As I got very close I finally noticed the faint glow of the green light. I jumped on the radio on 72, no answer. I hailed again on 78 and said, "Dude, that isn't cool, no lights on!' He returned and told me to "Mind my own business!" I replied "I will probably be the one picking him up out of the water if someone runs him over!!!" HE TURNED HIS LIGHTS ON! On the way in another boat sitting on anchor with a light so dim I was 50 yards from him before I saw it. Not a good night for the safety aspect of Sword fishing. Definitely a reminder to keep your eyes open and wits about you when you are on the darkside. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

QQ........no need to hide my identity, I will come out and say it because it pissed me off that is ruined my drift. Not the fact that somebody is illegally fishing bouys but moreso because somebody in that tournament was cheating and
On my last drift of the night.......I notice a boat coming closer and closer. Then it turned all its lights off and we didnt see it. Then we saw it again this time at most maybe 300 ft away all blacked out no lights on. I tried to raise them on the radio with no response. Now I am getting pissed/curious/worried wtf is going on. I tried calling them a couple times no response but my radio wasnt working so I figured that they werent hearing me. At some points if I would have yelled they could have heard me but we could not make out the boat. It was a tournament so I ignored it thinking it was either feds or some kook and kept fishing. The boat seemed to just idle there keeping just far away we couldnt identify it. I had 7 rods out so I wasnt picking up the spread. Since QQ was in the same general area I am pretty sure it was the same boat he saw. Anyways......I couldnt figure it out until all my jugs started clumping up and we thought we were tight. I reel in the hugest mess of a tangle ever and I am like how did this happen and where is all this line from? Then I noticed that it was like 900 lbs test that was all tangled up and thats when I put the whole thing together and it started to make sense. I start handlining in the line. We came across two baits both slashed.....no lps, just glowsticks and strobes on the old mustad offset 11/0's that they dont make anymore. We cut the line after checking two baits because it was a waste of time. The baits were attached to the mainline via the small longline clips and we came across two before cutting it. To the cheaters...... 1. you will do much better with 1 hook on the bouy and sewing your squid 2. Thanks for the lights 3. I dont care that you need to cheat, but if you think you are gonna come that close to a boat all blacked out you are taking a big risk of whether or not johnny brought his bangstick 4. All you had to do was answer me on the radio and I would have let you get your chit Not a hater, and like I said I dont care, most likely I will still outfish you even with the bouys. Johnny

Yeah Johnny I do not post names without permission
I just hate the fact that because of a cheater or an idiot with no lights on they are putting the lives of myself and my crew in danger. As well as everyone else out there. If I ran over some gear I don't think it would sink a boat but it could blow a motor or lower unit and swimming on the 50 to clear a motor is no fun right johnny But a boat with no lights on is asking for death. We have all had that freighter sneak up on us out there. They most likely saw us and our boat lights and steered a little to clear us.On a small boat with no lights on in choppy weather that ship might not see it on radar and with no lights on they would be prop wash Come on guys just be smart out there. If you want to kill yourself do us all a favor and buy a gun and stick it in your mouth.Do not try to take us out with you. Anyone that was fished with me knows I say the same thing every time we get in the inlet(Well we cheated death again)

Dude it is not the buoy gear he or I have a problem with.Read what he said He tried to call the other boat more than once and the boat and the gear was dark :!: No running lights and the buoys did not have strobes or even highflyers :!: I would fish gear if I had a permit and the time.I am no stranger to commercial fishing thats for sure. But a dark boat and gear is putting me and my crew in danger :!: The only logical explanation for a boat to do that on that night[swordlords 60+boats]was they were in the tourney and cheating.
