Thought I would give daytime swording a try for a few ( 5 ) hours; using the same technique as the Islamorada guys we set up just east of the 45 square; used 10 lbs old lead on a release ( next time its 20 lbs of rocks) ; released it on the bottom ( 1600 feet) and let the squid rise in the water column; also fished a a 600 foot deep line on a jug and a shallow line. Three problems were evident: first, you need about a million yards of line to get the bait to the bottom in a 4.4 kt current; second, no way do you want to use lead ( way too expensive) and last, you need alot of patience as we had only one bite ( if you dont count the 20 lb dolphin ). However, that being said it was a nice change; easier to tell which way the freighters are headed ( for those of us without radar) and Im definitely going to give it a few more tries. ( after I put about 2500 yards of braid on my Tiagara 80's)

Hooked Up

Thanks for the report. Did you hook up or was it slashed? I'd like to give it a try. I have about 1100 yards of line on my 50 wides so we'll see what happens. One morning as the sun was coming up and we were getting skunked I dropped a bait down deeeep and came up with a slash.

I've hit bottom (out of desparation) with just 32oz and a slow drift in 1200ft. Using 130lb braid. It CAN be done. But no payoff as of yet.

I'm still eager to try it. I think it would be pretty insane to know that a bait is more than 1000 feet deep. I would be tempted to try it in under 1000 foot depths as well. There is no way in hell I would be dropping a 10lb lead down there and busting it off. We have a few ideas in mind

The bait was slashed; no hookup; I have been using 850-900 yds of 150 lb braid with a 100 yard 100 lb momoi top shot on my avet 50's ever since i dumped a whole spool of 80 lb on a monster. The 4.4 kt current was the real problem or else I could have been down with enough line to fight. I might try 1100-1200 ft range next time.

That, or just use a wicked heavy lead next time. And try to time it with a slower current. A few weeks ago would have been perfect, Capt. Jim from The Beast reported a 0.2 kt current. lol This is also when no reports on fish were given and everyone wondered what was going on because all fishing was terrible
