Default how long to let them eat

heres the question, if a fish pick's it up and runs w/o warning, how long do you let hin run before going tight.

another, if the fish is toying/slashing the bait do you start to bring him closer to the boat if he hasnt picked up the bait yet. and if he picks it up how long before you tighten up on him.

i fish my drag just where the line dosent pay out while were drifting and the strike is @ 15#

We don't play that game any longer (about 1 year now)

We fish for swordfish, like we do for kingfish, tuna, etc on the reef.

Locked up in the rod holder.

When the fish pulls drag, it is usually glued on.

Not saying this is the best method, but works for us well.

Good Luck

Note to self: Reinforce the rod holders.

Or when you see the balloon tip (if used), a Light streaking across the surface (this one may take every one on a rod until some one comes tight or drag pulls) who ever is not on a rod should be yelling, quiet loudly and histarickly.........REEL...REEL....REEL...REEL...D @MNIT

Along with ST, we fish drags at strike which is 15-16 lbs. and reel like crazy, your arm will be ready to fall off shortly btw. We reel tight (just not as crazily) if the balloon flips or is running across the surface as well.

Like ST said, it may not be the best way but our fish have been hooked pretty nicely.

We leave ours loose so any kind of slashing or toying is indicated. If a balloon tips or a light comes up crank like hell. Theres no need to wait, the fish usually picked it up already. If you have your drags tight and a fish swats a bait you will never know until you check it later. If it's loose you will always know you had a bite or know you are getting a bite, and most the time you can crank up slowly and they will come back to finish it off.

We have had slashes and have not known about it unti lwe checked the baits. We think, along with many other people, that there is so much slack in the line that fish already has the bait in its mouth. He's either on or he's not. I would rather find out right away instead of an hour into the battle.

I would rather have the chance to feed him a little before coming tight. The fish I have let eat a little stay on better then the ones that have not been fed.

We fish em tight in the rod holder also.

And just like you said on those jugs rods.. it can be minutes of them playing around before any drag is pulled...

I fish the as loose i can get it without it pulling out. On tip rods I let them eat for a good 8 seconds, on float rods I wait about 3, Both rods I slam it in strike (18-20lbs) and crank like a mofo!
