Default Sebastian Swordfish Recon Mission

Beerman and I did a seminar in Sebastian a few months back. During that time, we found most guys trying the sword thing were stopping well short of the canyon. I went on record saying I thought the canyon would be the place to try. Turns out, that was correct.

Very snotty night, but wound up with 11 hits, released one pup and a small dolphin. Due to weather we were unable to chase tuna and when dawn came, the storms were building so we hightailed it back to the dock.

So we popped a cherry and found some new grounds.

1 for 11 #-o Do you think it was because of the snotty weather?Did any seem like good fish or a lot of pups?

Brother-in-law lives in the ft myers area and has tried the canyons a few times now for swords and had caught a fish each time out. Nothing too big, but 1 fish is all is takes.

Think it was both. Had a rookie on the rod and he missed two he should have stuck. Rest of them were just slashed baits. It was rough as balls.

Yeah I really think Circle Hooks do not work as well in rough weather for swords. To much jerking around does not let the fish eat well enough for the Circles to do their thing.Plus a rookie on the rod swinging and not reeling will not help.

To Mitch's credit, I do like using Circle Hooks. They are my prefered hook style for most species, especially when bottom fishing... but not for swords. If I were using Circles, and started missing several hookups... bring out the J's. Too much money and effort goes into swording to not put something on the plate. I admit to being a meat hunter, and wanna put fish on the deck. In close to 30 trips, I have only seen 1 sword hooked deep. Not enough for me to switch over.

The reason they went 1 for 11 was that they were missing something (besides the fish) ME!!!!!!

As you know, no matter what hook you are using, when it's rough, you miss more fish. That night was the exception not the rule. You've seen enough reports from me where we bat 100% to know I'm not switching because of one off night.

In actuality, we came tight on three fish and landed two. The rest were either quick hits or just slashed.
