It is a little late to send but didnt get pic till now caught him the day after the last sword fish tournament. The fish was caught on a tld 50 with 32 pound drag. The fish still took 4 1/2 hours to land. The fish weighed in at light house point 298 1/2 almost 300 still trying for that one. Also the same night released a pup and a 52 inch fish. [img][/img]

Catching,
It's funny you say that. I am a firm believer in the harder you pull the harder they pull. One night we had a couple of fish and were screwing around. We all agreed if you put the heat to a tuna he would pull to his heart blew up. We also agreed if you didn't pull he wouldn't. So we get a bite he start pulling we hit him with probably 20lbs. and he pulled. Then, we pulled the drag back to almost free spool and believe it or not he turned right around and swam to the boat. Granted it was probably only a 50 inch fish but he came right back and we could have laid him to rest. Eric, Nice job on that fish, That's along time to stay cool and get him. Congradulations.

TD,
So far every Sword has not fought the same way, I caught that one 55 inch Sword that took 2 hours, had to the boat in 45 min with 15 pounds of drag, laid on its side brother went to stick it and it took off under the boat, and through the engines and took another 300 yards of line  , fish kept coming at the boat and sounding, after 90 min cranked up the heat to 20 pounds and it just pissed it off, it took three more 100 yard runs and finally had a heart attack and died. When I got it boat side it was just twitching but since that is was it did the first time as well still stuck it with two gaffs and tail roped it just to make sure it was not playing possum. And after all that found out it was hooked solid upper jaw threw the eye socket, could have locked the reel down and had it to the boat in 10 minutes.

That's called luck. We will revisit that statement next March. We will see if you still have not had a bad hook set then. What I was saying is let him run with some heat and then back off. When he settles in just lead him back to the boat nice and easy. When he is next to the boat just wip out your Balls and figure out if they are big enough to end it. :rabbit: |

We don't "put the heat" on the fish anymore then strike. We fish at strike, then crank and get tight on the fish and crank then crank some more, then they let me settle into the hanress and get pulled around because most of the fish out there are pretty close if not have a weight advantage on me of 107 lbs.
I would surely try the idea of back off of the drag, after I had a fish over 74 inches in the boat Or I had two others along with it

Hey TD,
I stuck a 8.5 foot Lemon Shark in the tail with a straight gaff at the side of the boat  really pissed her off but was able to hold on until roped off hook removed and released, and a 6 foot bull the same way that was green in the same night. Think the beers had something to do with that. Very sobering experience Bulls are just nasty  sharks. That gaff will never be the same  and the boat took on some battle wounds from the gaff and the teeth. Any way I think I have the gonads to do the same with a Sword, I did read about doing that with Tuna just have not tried yet on a Sword. Hey I learned something on this thread. :roflmao: |

If you are going to wait for that day, I guess you will never get a chance to try it.
By the way the heat is whatever your max is. "We don't "put the heat" on the fish anymore then strike." That would be your heat. When does school start, your getting soft.

Sharks may be like dogs but they are a very good practice fish for a crew handling a big fish for the first time
and breaking in your 50's and 80's. Would rather have something bad happen a mile off than 20, and also tweaks the routine of the crew duties once the battle is on with the real deal Big Game since the method of catching them is similar.

I was just kidding.
Sharks are not like dogs. There like cats.           I could not resist. They are great practice for green crews. Just watch out for those pointy things. |

I have no idea when schools starts. How am i getting soft ??
Because I don't nail the drag on a sword, I just get pulled around the boat by him because he's bigger than me? I as referring putting the heat on the fish as stepping the drag up past strike to crank it to the boat :???: :???: |

With only 20lb of drag how is she bigger than you?You weigh 107lbs so any drag less then that you are ok
