52 were fully developed and would have been out in the next day or two. The other three were undeveloped. straight from The Florida Fishing Weekly.

yikes!

All these big females (most big sharks are) should be released...

Same type of deal as the monster shark tourney up north, but I don't think this shark was eaten and given away.

PAY ATTENTION JR!! It was used for research. But I am still totally against the killing of it. That picture is so sad.

I do pay attention, okay great it was used for research. The only reason it was used for research was because it was dead and they had no other uses for it. So they did the only thing that they could do, which was study it. Great for science, but i doubt these scientists would have ever wanted this fish to be killed.

52 more sharks would have been in the ocean in just a day or two. 3 more were coming after that.

Jr. -
I agree 100%. This thing was killed for pictures. Don't get me wrong, I have the killer instinct (Ken knows), but I would not contemplate killing that huge female for one second. It is inexcusable.
I bring a 1,000 lb mako boatside and I would think about it, but still let it go. 1,000 lb sword boatside and I am on the VHF calling you guys for help getting it in the boat.

Would it still be sad if one of the 52 bit your legs off one day? Do you guys cry when you keep a big grouper that's full of roe (Last time I checked their stock wasn't so hot)? I personally wouldn't keep anything I didn't intend to put to good use, but if a 1000# mako rolls up beside my boat I'll let him go as well, it will just be missing a steak or two.

I told you I am a killer. Sure I am pro-conservation, but I do take a fish ocassionally (a few each year). I don't want to deal with a grander mako on a 36 ft. boat 20 miles offshore at night, plus (and this is just speculation) I'm not sure the meat off of a 1,000 lb shark would be as good as the meat off of a smaller one, say 300 lbs.

I have to imagine that if I had a grander sword I would try to boat it...grander mako I would have lots of questions and probably piss on the deck (though a 6 ft. sword is pretty intimidating, too).

I agree with Finalpoint. Putting a 1000lb mako in a center console boat is not too smart. And I also beleive that the meat on teh bigger sharks is not quality...

1000lb Mako would get strapped to the side and towed home  maybe I would have to think about that one for a little while. Not because of the hassle in taking a mako that big but more to do with the eating of it.A grander sword would have 2 darts in it be tail roped and on the way home in the same time it would take me to figure out the mako situation.Would I feel bad about killing either one?Yes I would but that is the game we play. Most of us are a little conservation minded and have diff views on killing a big breeder but it is the hunt for the big ones that keeps us going. If not bluegill in the pond would be enough for us.

Some of us might say they would release the big fish. :???: Some would say kill it but until you are faced with that prob no one really knows the answer.

yeah quack, well said. i have rule on my boat... if i cant eat it i dont want to fight it.. and if i can eat it, it has to be in my personal slot of size and species to make the trip to the freezer..

I would not feel comfortable with having a grander mako sitting at the transom of the 33' Center console. I would probably watch it the whole way home 8-[ , but I would feel a little better if he had a few 9 millimeter shells through his head.

And I agree with QQ, I think that you can tell yourself you wouldn't stick her. But I think when you are faced with that situation and you have that fish boatside you would stick her and bring her home. Would you feel guilty ? Most likely yes, but like QQ says, that's part of the game that we choose to play. If you aren't okay with that then keep yourself out of the position of getting in that situation and sticking a huge female breeder. I think I would be okay if I cleared Hillsboro Inlet with a fish over 612 lbs and 4 ounces.
