I plan on trying daytime swordfishing with a L.P. and there is enough drag on the reel and enough power to bring up any fish. Anyone have any ideas on what bait to use at 1500 ft. down? We live in the keys and know the best spots to fish. When the weather clears, we are going to give it a try.

Yup, squid for sure. Just make sure you tie down that LP electric down real good. I would hate to see one of those reels go into the drink, mine or not. Good luck! I think if you send a live bait down that deep it would explode!

I believe you are about to be illeagal, I am not 100% positive, but once you use a eletric for swords you are crossing into commerical, unless of course you have a commerical liscense. The HMS permit is rod and reel NOT eletric rod and reel.
I would read the grey areas, besides unless you were meat hungry what fun would it be ? |

Chumsley Mullethead Jr.,
What kind of thinking is that? It's OK if it is illegal as long as you don't get caught? Haven't you learned anything from your multitude of hours on this forum? Capt. Jim The BEAST |

I'm not saying that at all. I was just comparing it to how you hear of people that stick a free swimmer which is illegal but no one seems to do anything about it, even if they don't like it. I don't think anyone would ever go to the extent of reporting people for catching a sword on an electric reel.

You're right, no one would probably report him for this. CaptKen was trying to suggest that he was entering into the illegal. You're suggestion is a possible way to get around it. This is not like cheating on a spanish math exam. Capt. Jim The BEAST |

The Beast: That is my quote, I am not going to try to tell you it isn't. The little wink sign at the end of t hat quote was representing the fact that I was fully joking (even though it's not too bad of an idea). I was actually laughing a little after I typed that.
I know this isn't like cheating on a spanish math exam? But wait, wouldn't the "dreel" also be illegal because it's electric ? I understand the fact that it is not on an electric reel but you can hammer the drag and crank it in the EXACT same way as you would with an LP or Kristal.

Good question Ken:
I am not sure of the answer on that either but will try to discover as time permits. Does anybody know for sure? And please provide the link or copy of the exact language that may support your statement. You know, I kind of assumed that an electric reel would have been required for the daytime swords caught in the keys because it did not seem to be too practical to discard a 10 lb. lead weight on every drop. But the actual method was never posted so I don't know for sure. But that is the way I was thinking. But imagine doing a deep drop with 6 hooks "for swordfish" attached to the line. Now that would be illegal, for sure, since the "handgear" limit is stated as 2 hooks maximum. But what would happen if you had a 6-hook chicken rig. Oops, no tile fish on this drop, just one of those pesky 200 lb. swordfish hogging the baits. I wonder if we should turn her loose? May have to if it is technically incorrect, to be on the up and up.P.S. - Yeah, I think a slip of a 50 implied some sort of bribe, to look the other way, so would have to be viewed as such. Book him Danno.

I was thinking the same thing about the 10lb weight, i was thinking of using a krystal with a 10lb weight that has a release clip on it, attached to the release clip is the main line of the rod you are fishing with, similar to a downrigger? This would b how I would try it anyway. Make sense?

The use of a clip to release the line, as in using a d/rigger, to allow you to fight the fish on a seperate rod and reel would be legal. The rest I'm not so sure of. Matter of fact, Nick mentioned in another thread about using an artificial and a natural squid on the same leader. Not sure if that would constitute the term, gang hooks!?! So many gray areas and so many things to think about... I'm so confused
I don't think Jr. was referring to a 50 as a bribe but rather to carry a 50TW reel to say that the fish was caught on that, not the Kristal. Jr., The dreel is used to crank a reel in when retrieving, not for fighting a fish. Holy Crap, my 18V DeWalt would break my wrist if I tried it on a fish and he made a run. Capt. Capt. Jim: I was referring to carrying the 50W or 80W or even a 130 so you could say it was caught on that, not the Kristal or LP. But it was not an idea for someone to try, it was a joking statement with the little wink guy at the end.
I was hypathetically speaking about the dreel system on a 9/0. I believe the dreel fits up to a 9/0 Senator? You could take that along and put baits down at whatever depth you could and change the drag settings to as tight as they can go and lock it up when you get a fish. Like people say, "the hook won't pull if it's hooked right". If the drag was tight enough you could just crank him in. If they made the dreel system for a 50w or 80w then you could put baits at the bottom and lock it up to the point of where the fish can't pull any drag and "dreel" away.
