Default Spanish Macks for sword baits?

Has anyone had any success using spanish macks for sword baits? I'm talking about a rigged up spanish like what is used when trolling for marlin.

They have worked for me in the past.I have got cut off twice by Mr Mako using spanish rigged like that. Both times never saw anything move just reeled in to check the bait and it was gone.

They work great. Rig them exactly like you would a marlin bait (skip bait), just make sure you break there backs. They actually swim and dart around in the current. It's amazing how alive they look under an l.p.

-Put a few extra stitches around where your hook comes out of the belly. They eat a lot more sloppy than a marlin and you don't want your hook to get out of line.

Quack quack:

Did you rig up your Mackerals with a tandem-J or a tandem treble?

What dou you think if you were to use cable for the the tandem hook connection? (In the event you prefer not to get cutoff.)

Any problem with doing that if you' re trying for marllin. Your backup in case those pesky Wahoo decide to muscle in on the spread.

Seems like everytime that I hear wire introduced, when you were trying to use monofilament, that the bite takes are turn in the unpreferred direction.. They must be able to smell wire? Even if it is tucked away.

I think fish can sense wire even if they can not see it Maybe there lat line can feel it or something :???: I use a single hook on my macks. The comes out under the fish about a third of the way down the length of the bait.I think they try to swallow head first so that puts the hook in the sweet spot

Have you tried rigging them in reverse for swordfish, drift fishing style?

I've only done live tinkers, blue runners or goggle eyes, so that method is not applicable there. But for dead butterflied tinkers it is the way we do it.

Any preference for that?

Hey, when we were in Lucaya last month we prepared a few yellowtales and lane snapper pan fry style. That involved scaling the fish, degutting and gilling it. We also used my sheers to nip the pec fins, dorsal fins and about half of the tail fin. Moses showed me that style. It looked pretty good for a pan fry fish. (It's good, tuda bone.)

I think that the next time I rig a dead mackeral, blue runner or other spiny reef fish for swordfishing, I think I may trying doing a little big of spiny nip-tucks and see how that works, leaving the scales alone, of course. Sounds like a nice tasty sword snack to me: down the hatch and hook-in if they chomp them in, head first.

In my experiments they do not care about wire. I used 275# coffee colored multistrand.
