Default Sword Newbie Question: Penn V Series or Shimano Tiagra

I now have some money burning a hole in my pocket. My budget does not allow for Accurate or Avet. Which do you guys think is best and why? Can I do with just 30's or do I need 50's. I would prefer to just buy 4- 30 size reels loaded with braid and a mono top shot. Tried a forum search with only one good reel post. Thanks!

I think the amount of money for an Accurate is rediculous, great reels but rediculous prices. If you have the money for them and feel comfortable about it, go for it.
We have the TLD 50 and love them.
If you are wondering about a 30 wide Tiagra or a 50 wide go with a 50 TLD, somewhat in the middle.
The TLD 50's are great but those wide Tiagras are certainly better. Just make sure no one has a ring or watch on.
We had them ordered but it came in wrong and got weird on us. lol

We fish 50 WLRS that is the Tiagra with the 80# drag system in it. We load them up with Power pro 80 and a top shot of Momoi mono. It gives you a lot of line and the reels are manageable.

My fishing partner had some Penn Internationals and had a drag lock up on him during a hard fight. The fish was lost and the reels went on e-bay the next day.

Look at the marine flea markets. You will see alot of Internationals but few if any Tiagras. That should tell you something.
Good luck!

Opinion: I think Tiagra's are much better built reels. Have smoother drags (kinda a fact) and have a much more comfotable feel

Fact: If for no other reason the tiagra clicker is loud as SH@##$$$ which is great when it only clicks 2 or 3 clicks when a fish is slashing a bait. I had the vs penn and the clicker is QUIET!!!! Remember when playing with the reels in the store after adding line quiets the clicker some!

Good luck!

Avets have super loud clickers! I like the avets! But for the money, TLD 50's work great!

I would definately go with the Penn V series over a tiagra. Penns are a lighter reel, which is a big plus in a stand up fight.

Stand up, weight means nothing. You've got 15-20lbs of drag on the reel, the last thing in your mind is "damn this is a heavier reel".

Performance is all that matters. Tiagra out perform any reel on the market, besides Accurate. Better drags, better drag rang and curve, better ball bearings, stronger gears. Most important, which few people concider, the Tiagra has a thicker frame then any other reel. Its much stronger, and resist's flexing at high drag presures that can cause gear damage.

The choice between 50W, 50, or 30W is all personal. If you wanted a smaller reel, but also just as functional would be Tiagra 30W. Back it with 80lb powerpro, topshot with 100yd of 50 PINK ANDE. That reel has no problem handling that. Just my .02 cents

litetackle the only problem with ande is it breaks at its breaking point or alittle over sometimes u need heavier line but cant fit it so many ppl use sufix which breaks well over its breaking point which is a plus to the light tackle fishermen
but thats my 2 cents overal i agree with wat u said about tiagras

not to turn this into a line hyjack, but you are correct, Ande is much closer to its stated line strength. Sufix and MoMoi do over-test alot. But the reason why i dont use either is just that reason, if I fish 20lb for swords (which i do), i want to say i caught a sword on 20lb, or very close to, not "well the line said it was 20lb, but it breaks at 45lbs." For light tackle guys thats were the fun is, IMO. Thats my posts for the next year

Default reels

in no way an expert but i am selling 3 of my penn 50TW'S and buying 50 size 2 speed reel's. i dont really care if there penn's or shimano's as long as there w's, but what a difference low gear makes when your cranking. JM2C....
