Hey, I'll be in Marathon tomorrow too. BTW what is the name of that restaurant that is on the water on the North side? I think there is only one that meets that description. (Or where the Parasail guy is based.) :?: Won't be there for the pleasure of fishing. A friend has been bugging me to go flying with him. So we got it pinned down for tomorrow. So the plan is to fly somewhere, domestic. Marathon or Key West came to mind. So we will just hang around for a late lunch (at that place) and head back around sunset. It sure beats the overseas highway exit during rush hours. Unless, you have any better suggestions of known good hang-outs in Marathon. You know me, I am always fishing for some good information. ~No. |

OK, I hear you. Exactamente, 'we took your advice' and went to Key West. Here's my story: We took off from North Palm Beach airport... It was sad to hear that the hurricanes from last year had done so much damage. Hermes mentioned to me that quite a few planes got damaged, some owned by Jimmy Buffet got whacked too. I mentioned the Albatrose and he seemed to concur that magnificent sea-plane machine was one of those damaged, inside the hangar. It is all hear-say, so you can verify yourself, but the fact of the matter is many planes were damaged at that time. Before the flight, Hermes was eager to show me, and my 10 year old son Alex that was all excited to go, the pre-flight drill. Mind you, I have flown only a few times in private aircraft, but I was never exposed to the basic training that all pilots must exercise to be properly prepared for flight. We were flying a Cessna 172, manufactured only a year after to my birth date, so I was initially alarmed, but if I am still ticking fine, then the Cessna, may have a vibrant spirit as well. And so she did, and so did Hermes. (Salude Sehnor !) After the fuel top off and the pre-flight, and undock the vessel drill (somehow I am still thinking water craft), the motor was fired up, electrical charge was fine, magneto, not alternator as we have been conditioned to today, for the most part. We were rolling. (Previously, information was acquired : we checked the weather conditions, etc.). A few engine tests... We turned the corner, as Hermes advised on how the foot pedals work, left... right, brake on top (L and R), etc. . "Now you do it": Oh shit, I was not ready for this. OK, so I did 'capish' some of all of it. Yes, I could keep this craft on track: albeit , a bit like a drunken sailor. Pedals only, and I was steering this craft. OK, this is fun, so far. Glad that he shared that with me...... We have the headphones on, with VOX (Basically, this suppresses the aircraft noise and when you speak loud enough, the transmission goes to the other headphones, or speakers in the craft. So I hear his communications on the designated channel to the air-traffic controller. We are good to go for flight on the runway. He Throttles up, 2400-2500 rpms. Now he tells me, "Michael, you take off: , wait until we get to 65 mph before giving here lift. " Holy Shit - I am not ready for this... I just got past the part of using the petals to steer "the plane"and Now we are going faster and faster and he tells me that , "you are driving. Me thinking, find a happy place, he has put me up to this, (I still suspect that he is still driving, but the plane is veering to the left, so I "must" step more on the right pedal, maybe it was not enough but I did not feel any intervention. More later... wifey has objected to more story telling for now we had a beautiful flight along the coast, from North Palm Beach to the end of the island chain. |
