Weeks:
I'm no expert but have done it successfully.
Follow these steps:
1.) Soak in a "saltwater" canal for about 3 weeks (you can tie bill to a dock or put in a gearbag). After that rinse with freshwater and shake any remaining meat out.
2.) Let get bone dry and sand evenly with a moderately coarse sandpaper.
3.) After this comes the artsy farty part: Some like Boyles will take the natural look and use an expoxy resin. Others wil use car bondo to fill in the hallow and use a flat black paint followed by a glossy black paint followed by a nice epoxy resin on top of that.

I got to admit the black look looks real cool if done right. I then take a gold paint marker and write the details of the catch. Sword length, weight, boat, captain, location, date to document swordfish.
Additionally you can go on the net and find prefabricated sticker with swords on them and out those on your bill before you coat the bill with the epoxy resin.

Believe it or not took me a while to put this all together because some people make good money doing this and are reluctant to share the process. Boyles get $400 +. Other may be a bit cheaper but some are even more expensive.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask and/or email!

Sincerely and Good Luck in you Preservation of Happy Fishing Memories,

Billfisher
