FYI... DO NOT APPLY FOR A PERMIT BEFORE MAY 1 IF YOU DO NOT ALREADY HAVE ONE. Obtaining a NEW permit before then will result in the acquisition of a 2005 permit, which will expire on May 31st. You will then have to renew (an additional $22) to get the 2006 permit. Just hitch a ride with someone until the 2006 permit is available... or pay the $22 for the 2005 permit to cover you through April 30th.
http://www.nmfspermits.com From the website: "2006 PERMITS COMING SOON - Hold tight, 2006 Permits will be available in late April/early May. If you held a permit in 2005 you will receive a renewal letter in the mail mid-April. Applying for a permit before May 1 will NOT get you a permit for the upcoming season." |

No. I had to buy my 1st permit in February anyway. I've taken my boat out there several times, so I needed it. I'm a victim of bad timing only. No big deal.
This post was just a warning to those that are about to get the permit for the first time. Of course, it's only a $22... which is worth it to bring home some meat. |

Please don't misunderstand my intent of this thread.
I'm all-for the permitting. If you're going after swords, you must have it. But if you (boat-owner) are planning to start swording with your own boat between now and May 1, be aware that your 2005 permit will expire on April 30th. As of May 1st, you will have to renew to obtain a 2006 permit. So, if you can avoid taking your own boat out before May 1st, that will save you a little $. |

No, not at all... I just didn't want this "public service announcement" to be taken as an anti-permit thing.
I think POLAR bought one thinking it was good for the 2006 season. He didn't realize it was gonna expire so soon. |

For Polar - Consider it more motivation to catch a fish before the 2005 permit expires, yeah yeah that' s the ticket.
Maybe even nab a Tuna while you're at it, which I think you need that Permit for as well (BFTs).And here we are goofing around and degenerating your post. We should be fishing instead. It's my therapy.Hello my name is RT, I has now been 28 days since my last swordfish. The freezer is now out of stock on swordfish and I think I am starting to feel withdrawal symptoms and getting cabin fever. You see how goofie my posts are getting. I think I am going to need to find some help. :bounce: |

Only $400 for beer? You must not be drinking it fast enough!
Regardless, don't the permits expire May 31, not in April?

SCO... correct. The HMS Permit season is June 1 thru May 31. (I fixed my initial post.) But anyone who buys a NEW one before the 2006 version is available will have the 2005 permit, which will expire on May 31st.
From the HMS Permit Shop site 4/10/06: "This system will be switched over to issue permits valid for the 2006 season (June 1, 2006 - May 31, 2007) starting in late April. Permits currently issued by this system are only valid through May 31, 2006." For additional info... http://216.12.134.122/ |
