Default This Months Florida Sportsman

There's a interesting article in this months Florida Sportsman . Actually two with the Bimini article . Its interesting the techniques being tried for swording especially the one about idling against the stream to stay in the productive area and the idea more hits occur while dropping or raising the baits. IF this weather ever lets me get out again I think im gonna try using my outriggers. They have adjustable release clips and I think i can adjust them to hold with the weight and drop from their ends . If this works the rocking of the boat would accentuate the movement below of the baits probably 5+ft depending how much the boat rocks. Has anyone tried using their outriggers and idling into the stream ? We seem to have a "sweet spot" area that after we drift past it we dont get hit . Our Tip rods are hit at least 3 times as many times as out bouys and I wonder if its because the boat rocking makes the tip rods move vertically more. How about two outriggers rigged like this at 100-150' trolled into the stream at idle to stay in the "sweet spot " ? Has anyone tried anything like this ? Even if just drifting wouldnt moving two tip rods to the end of the outriggers get them away from the boat and make them move vertically constantly ? I think a "Hit" would be extremely easy to see if the clip released or the bend went out of the outrigger your on. Just a crazy idea. Any thoughts ? Randy

I think your are right for three reasons: First, it seems we do get alot of hits as the baits are going down; second, I have used my outriggers for the non tip rods and I believe I have had more hits on them; and third, I think I have had many, many more bites on rougher days as opposed to real calm days.

Captian Mitch uses release clips on all his tip rods, but runs it off the rod.

I have had my best day when it was 4-6 in a 23' boat. I do work my tip rods up and down a lot and produces fish consistantly.

To sit in one spot against a 3-5 knot current wouldn't you have to troll at 3-5 knots? :???:

Wouldn't that be just trolling for swordfish? :???:

I have read the articles on this method and it does make sense. It is not like swordfish just sit around waiting for a dead squid to drift by. They are predators I am sure they would hit a moving target much more aggressively than something just drifting by.

I am willing to give it a try if the does not stop blowing soon. It will definitely be more comfortable to troll in 3-5ft seas then to drift in them.

Yes it is, but i guess guess I should have been more clear. A swimming target that is trying to get away vs. someting drifting in the current.

No dead squid drifting at a 3-5 is not moving If the entire stream is moving at 3--5.
Your actually sitting in the same piece of water that is moving geographically North. If the stream is running North 4 mph and you idle 4 mph South you stay in the same geographical spot but are covering 4 miles of changing water . What if You were to stay over that "sweet spot" that you get hammered the most and let 4 miles of water go by you every hour ? I dont know if the weights would hold the bait at depth at 3-5 . You'll actually be covering less bottom but much more water. IF I CAN EVER GET OUT again im gonna try it. We seem to get hammered right around the same area each time and then as we get farther away the bite slows to nothing. Im gonna see if I can set the outriggers to hold 2#s of lead in a 5 knot current . I imagine a bite would be noticable when that lead drops and that outrigger bangs up or the bend in the rigger goes straight. 4 knots into the current with the riggers swaying up + down 5' at the tip (boat rock) should put some real life into those dead squid. Just an experiment ! Who knows ? Randy
