Just a thought but does any one have any interest in a series of 3 month long big fish challenges.Pay out would be top three places.something like $100.00 per person to enter. We could not do by boat because so many of us fish on other peoples boats. He can have 1 or a couple certified places to weigh in fish. One down south PE area one in the middle and one up north like sailfish marina.Fish can be brought to scale by truck.I can not see how you could cheat unless a friend got the fish and was not in the contest and you weigh it as your own.But this is a small group and some one would find out about a cheat.Or when the money is awarded you have to pass a poly test.I think this would be alot of fun to track the big fish that are caught.I have not asked him but I think Mike could help run it through this forum.A sticky thread with a live leader board would be cool.We could have a full payout schedule or maybe donate 50%to help buy swordfish sat tags.Maybe the billfish foundation could help out with tagging kits for everyone that enters the challenge?I think this would be a cool thing to start but I want to know what you guys think and see who would be up for the challenge? If this looks do able I would be glad to help put things together.Any suggestion on this are most welcome.
thanks Eric

Sounds cool. That weigh-in may be a problem due to the limited "heavy" scales around. I don't know of any scales in the Boynton area by water, and I don't have a truck to haul a biggun.
A purely gentleman tourney wouldn't be any different than our normal posts. Money would be good prize, but then you can run into disputes. It's a good idea, but let's iron out some details first. I'm IN regardless. |

Ok 60 views one post and 3 votes?Maybe $100 is to much?Let me know what you think and please vote.I talked with Mike and he is up for it.He has put up some shirts for the winners and maybe some other stuff. The more people in the more cash to win.I think we could keep the registration open the whole time that way new people could get in at any time.I do not think guides should enter but the people that fish with them could. If a charter wants to take a shot they could register before their trip.

Up for it?
I already gave at the last tournament, within the past 3 weeks. You must have some nice tricks up your sleeves. Seems like you are motivated by these tournaments. Sounds like your fishing for a new boat too. Another suggestion: Instead of weighing the fish due to the multi-port possibilities, perhaps just measure the fish with the two dimensions and use the standard formula. It could be off from the true weight but the dimensions could make it an easy solution. Ok, I voted. (So what if one says No, you're looking for yes men anyway.) |

RT:You could do by length but the girth measurement would be very subject to location of measurement.Around the dorsal  You would have to have someone else measure the fish that would be impartial.I would like the person that voted no to tell my why just because I am curious what could be done to make you change your mind or what could be changed.

I think this is a really great idea! We learn so much about the fishery (and each other) and the sport at these tourneys.
Here's my idea for a slight variation on the traditional tourney: How about a six month ( April- October ? ) or longer tourney where each boat "checks" out at one of a number of "certified" check points and pays a small fee ( $20? $25? $50? )per fishing day ( or night) to be in the tourney. They then return to that same check point within a specified period of time to weigh in their fish. This will do several things: 1. Give us alot of info on big swords caught over a longer period of time 2. Level the playing field for those of us who dont have all that much time to fish; meaning, those who fish more days pay more 3. The entry fees would add up to a sizeable sum over a six month period 4. It would be easier to weigh in at the same place you checked out so no one needs to "truck" their fish 5. It would make it difficult to weigh someone elses fish ( not that I am worried about it as we are an honorable group ) What do you think? |

I can't even think of where theres a scale around PE, except for Harbor Towne and it sucks because you cant hang a long fish, you have to tie one up sideways. |

I am glad to see all the interest. It seems that there could be some issues with a money tourney that lasts for 3 months.I am working out the details with some people that have more knowledge of these issues than I.But think this can still be done with some changes.I think the 6 month idea could work better maybe $50 to sign up and only sponsored prizes to be awarded the use of the money is one of the things I am looking into at this time. Some kind of research, study,or something that will help insure the viability of our fishery.I think we all need to pay more attention to the future challenges that we will be facing to keep the fun in this fishery. One of the rules for this challenge will be the fact the no fish will be counted without a reporting number to go with the fish!I hope that this idea can be put to life and we will all have fun trying to catch that slob
like we don't already.

QQ,
The long tourney would work for me since I only get down 3-4 times a year. When we come down it's 5-7 days of nonstop fishin, weather permitting. Not sure of your parameters at this point. For instance, my next trip in a few weeks, will fish Marathon first, then out of West Palm. Is Marathon too far south for what you have in mind to include a fish caught? Let me know, I think I'm in if it all works out. |

If all goes well I think it will start in May or June and run 6 Months then start again. It will be a friendly event with some type of reg fee that will go to some kind of effort or agency that will enhance the fishery.I think a tagged fish division will be a good idea as well.
