Default Tred Barta catches tailing sword

Im sure some of you have seen this episode where tred barta gets a all expense paid trip to cabo to fish a 45 rampage for striped marlin. well he gets there and they first catch a sail and the captain is wanting the mate to get the bill and barta wants him to cut the leader art the rod tip. i have no problem with either but i thought barta was being a dick trying to tell the mate to not do what the captain wants. Then they see a tailing sword in broad day light and barta hooks up. the captain tells the mate to get the gaff and then barta starts telling them they are gonna release it. long story short they release it. i think it is awesome to release a fish like that but i dont like how he tells the capt what to do. I have never been the biggest fan of barta but this makes me not like him even more.

My point is if i had a all expense paid trip in cabo, i would do what ever the capt wanted me to.

oh yea and the sword whoops treds ass.

If I was the caption he would have been swimming home. Every time I have seen him on tv he yells at his friends and family but at least he is on his own boat. He should stick with hunting he seems to be good at that.

thats right. he did catch it on 20lb. which is impressive. my main points to the post was that there is nothing cooler than catching a tailing sword in day light and that i wouldnt put up with his shit.

Do what the Captain says?! The Captain did NOT pay for the trip, Barta/*his sponsors) did. Whatever the PAYING client says, goes... as far as keeping or releaseing<in many cases, not all>
Very cool though!

you must be joking?

a charter has ZERO say over what is boated or released. the captain and crew are responsible for abiding by regulations that could effect the future of their employment.

nothing against tred, read a few of his articles. he is mostly hype, but he does have a passion for his profession.

Barta sucks! Mr. Conservative?
Is it just me, or do a lot of ya'll not understand how he could be so conservative and yet fish for marlin/tuna with 20-30# test. I'm REEL impressed. Arrogent prick.
I need to see that video.
Most of us could outfish him every day!

Love him or hate there is not much in the middle. But he is a good fisherman that has put nice fish on the dock for over 30yrs.He is very extreme but he has done a lot of good things for the fishing community and with his charity tourneys raised big money to help the less fortunate. He is a good father that has raised some good blue water kids.So love him or hate him he would not care. But as a fisherman a father and a philanthropist he should be respected.

Yes the guy comes off like a jerk and most of the big fish he has boated were caught about 20 years ago but have any of you fished around where he does? The reason for that is if you fish in the Northeast we killed most of the big fish in the area so it's hard to kill a fish twice.

I fish around him quite often, like him or hate him the guy out fishes about 80% of the boats out there every time he goes out.

I hate to fish with people that yell so I could probably never fish with him. If you charter a boat it should be discussed prior to leaving the dock on what is kept and what is released. You are paying for the trip so if you want to let it go you should be able to and if the captain tells you no before you go then don't go.

P.S. It is for TV so you know they are not going to hang a billfish on TV.

Tred is the Howard Cosell of fishing. He is also someone who has killed more fish than any of us ever will, but now has found " conservation". Thats what is most annoying to me-do as i say, not as I did. But he does a lot of good for charity to his credit.

Thank God most of us "found" conservation. I for one did things in the 70's that were considered acceptable by most(I know some people knew everything and have done it right forever) such as eating marlin and sails and throwing trash overboard to name a few. None of which I would do today. My point is conservation comes from education. BTW I am not a fan of Tred but he is trying to educate the masses.

It is easy to critique what you dont know. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Every sport needs it's characters.

I've got a funny story about Tred from last years Miami Boat Show.

First some background. A good buddy is a biologist for the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) down at Scripps. For five years running they went on 3-month long bigeye tuna tagging trips down near the Galapagos. They set a string of FADs and they'd work those amidst the Seiner fleet that's hammering the fish down there. They were surgically installing archival tags, plus the regular spaghetti tags. On one trip alone they tagged over 9,000 bigeye tuna (100 archival tags, as those get expensive). Most of those were caught using lift poles, but he was given a Tiburon Smartshift two speed reel to put through its paces. He finally broke the reel after 450 some odd fish. Keep in mind that this was just one of five of these trips. (One time I was between jobs and they invited me to come along. The wife said go ahead. I passed as I did not want to risk a gap in my resume. What a dope I was.)

Here's a link describing one trip:

Hasting Rod Manufacturing LLC - Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission

So that established, my buddy made a passing comment about Tred in a phone conversation. I watch very little TV and do not get cable or dish. Apparently in the intro to his show, Tred claims to have caught more bigeye tuna than any man alive. So at the Miami Boat Show, I introduced myself to Tred and asked him about this claim. He said "yes Steve that is the case." So I asked him how many bigeye he had caught? Tred looked at me and said "approximately 400". I then proceeded to pull out my Blackberry which was already opened up to the link above and explained how my buddy had done 450 bigeye tuna on rod and reel on just one trip and they had done 5 of these trips for the IATTC. Tred looked at me and said "ok Steve you got me, but I'm still probably in the top two or three." Then he said "Steve, I can tell that you know that bullshit is deeper and thicker when you get to the top." We smiled, shook hands and went our separate ways. He will take his arrogance to his grave.
