So here I am after 4AM posting a thread on the forum. What's up with that? The truth of the matter is that we had a great night on the water and accomplished our goal of getting a sword newbie his first fish on his first trip.
This story all began at Beachdancer's Christmas party where I met a fine young GI just home from Mosul Iraq. He said he likes to fish and would love to catch a swordie, from that point, I was on a mission to make it happen. It seemed like we had a weather window tonight, so we took a crack at it. I can only say that it wasn't TOO pretty out there but, we pulled the trigger and there was no turning back.
Nick met Mike from Island Clan in Lakeworth to accept some fresh Mack's and a beautiful bullet Bonito and we were out before too long. Though we did have to wait for FlatsfishB and Beerman to run to the beach to have a look. They got back to Haradise and confirmed that it was do-able but not pretty. They were right.
The Motley crew prepares for departure with our game faces on and a mission to accomplish.
We run just over an hour through less than perfect sea condition and get to the 03 and 49 lines and get the spread out. It was all good. With only four other boats out fishing, that we could see and a very quiet radio, our enthusiasm was not running too high. The North wind was friggin cold and no bites for what seemed like an eternity. Most of us took a nap while NickC was working the baits all night long.
Finally, at 1:30 Nick yells that we have a fish on. This guy hit the shallow bait and came up as they often do so we scramble to figure out which rod the fish was on as it zipped by the boat with the electrolume in tow. Finally got all of that sorted and got our GI, Ben harnessed up and the fight was on. Ben made short work of a short fish but we were pleased to have accomplished our goal. We got Ben his first fish on his first night of swordfishing.
We released the spunky pup and decided to call it a night at 1:30. The run back in was much nicer and our evening adventure ended in success.
