After two years of thinking about it I finally went out looking for swords the night of 7/24. I made a 10 hour, 30+ mile drift over what is called Dwyer's Domain and Canaveral Canyons. Two canyon areas about 2500ft deep, 50nm E of Port Canaveral. I set out three lines with 12" squid, and a couple cyalume sticks at depths of 100,200 & 300 feet, using water jugs as floats. I also set out one of those cheap lights off a cleat to attract bait. Got a bite around 10PM but lost it, then reeled up a nurse shark around midnight but nothing after that. After reviewing my log I did end up drifting a bit W of the heart of the canyons for the most part, which is a pretty steep rolldown. Overall pretty disappointing. Is it critical to use Electralume lights instead of light sticks? Has anyone fished out of Canaveral?

sounds like you are doing everything right. i have never fished that far north for swords. try going on boldwater.com and asking those guys. i am sure they will hook you up. good luck with it. swordfishing isn't something you just pick up. it takes time. you will get.

I caught my first 20 fish on light sticks, they worked fine. I switched to electralumes a while ago so did not have to keep buying sticks (we would typically go through about twenty per night) we have had pretty much the same success rate with the electralumes. One advantage of the electralumes is they don't break at depths like the sticks but overall I don't think it makes a difference. If fish are there and they are feeding they will eat a bait with a light stick or with an electralume.

i use glowsticks. i have a few lp's running around, but i stick to g-sticks for the most part.
i have caught fish with no light before, they are not picky. i would expect to hear the bite starting to heat up again shortly. i would plan a trip friday, or sat.

i have only tried the port once --- we went 1 for 3 --- we fished a bit shallower then your attempt.
we were using lp lights and sticks. 2 of the bites were on squids - 1 on a live bait fished on the tip line under the hydro glow. ed dwyer went out saturday and got two --- one was a 50 inch fish the other 45 inches. http://www.swordfishingcentral.com/f...opic.php?t=330 good luck. |
